Nuclear Medicine Technologist

Job Description The Nuclear Medical Tech 2 arranges patients for nuclear medicine examinations, produces NM images to aid in the diagnosis of medical problems, and prevents patients from unnecessary radiation exposure. The position involves ensuring patient safety through preparation, calibration, and administration of radiopharmaceuticals, and performing all functions of the role in accordance with departmental policy. Responsibilities Technical Tasks: Exhibits working knowledge of all Nuclear Medicine equipment and procedures as outlined in the Department protocol manual and has completed required competencies for equipment and procedures. Refers to physician's orders/chart for any special instructions and corroborates clinical history with the procedure ordered. Routinely obtains patient history before procedures, including questioning females of child‑bearing age regarding pregnancy. Explains procedures completely to facilitate cooperation and alleviate patient anxiety. Documents all pertinent information, including history, technician initials, and exception codes, appropriately. Prepares films for interpretation by pulling previous films and providing completed work sheets. Demonstrates awareness of radiation safety procedures for self and patient, wears protective clothing and film badge at all times. Maintains room and work area in neat, orderly fashion. Regularly checks equipment, accessories, and supplies, keeping the area stocked at all times. Assumes responsibility for portions of the department quality improvement program as requested, including QI suggestions, exception reporting, and data gathering. Ensures all Nuclear Medicine equipment is maintained and serviced when indicated. Orders all Nuclear Medicine supplies as needed, maintains inventory, controls supply costs, and evaluates proposed capital expenditures. Assists in other areas of the department as workload permits. Works a rotating on‑call schedule to provide 24‑hour coverage of the Nuclear Medicine department. Maintains department compliance with regulatory agencies and credentials as appropriate. Critical Thinking: Obtains all necessary information for successful completion of duties and regularly confers with the radiologist. Assesses patients who present difficulties and seeks assistance as needed. Performs work accurately and timely, prioritizes procedures in crisis or emergent situations, and strives to complete all scans as scheduled. Organizes daily workload so that patient exams are completed on time, coordinating the Nuclear Medicine schedule with other areas to prevent patient waiting. Maintains on‑call and daily work schedules, providing the on‑call schedule to registered nurses on time. Adjusts daily work schedules as needed to maximize productivity and efficiency for the department, using available measurement tools. Submits completed monthly QA reports by the fifth working day of each month. Assists in developing the skills of other staff members, supervises students in clinical education, and assists with orientation of new employees. Evaluates employees under supervision and acts appropriately as Deputy Radiation Safety Officer in the absence of the Radiation Safety Officer. Other duties as assigned. Consistently performs 12 organizational Service Standards focused on Values, Service, and Quality. Qualifications Experience: Two years experience in Nuclear Medicine. Education: Graduate of an accredited school for Nuclear Medicine Technology. Special Skills: Computer skills and supervisory skills.
