Departmental OverviewThe Industrial Engineering and Operations Research (IEOR) Department is an academic department within the College of Engineering. With over 20 active tenure-track faculty, as well as emeriti, lecturers, and visiting scholars, IEOR serves approximately 85 Master of Engineering (MEng), 150 Master of Analytics (MAnalytics), 75 MS /PhD, and 350 undergraduate students. At Berkeley IEOR, we expand the frontiers of optimization, stochastics, and data science to solve grand challenges in transportation logistics, supply chains, healthcare, energy, robotics, finance, and risk management. The department has strong ties with other departments in the UC Berkeley College of Engineering and enjoys close relationships with the departments of Statistics, Mathematics, and Economics, as well as with the Haas School of Business.
This position serves as the primary graduate student services advisor for the 5th Year MS and terminal MS programs and supports all graduate degrees in IEOR. Responsibilities include providing a wide range of student services duties and responsibilities for an academic department/school/college or organization. This position provides assistance to the dean/chair, faculty, other staff, and students in academic advising, recruitment, admissions, financial aid, degree completion, ASE hiring support, the evaluation and awarding of prizes and fellowships, graduate student orientations, Visit Days and related graduate student events; and at times, provides additional staff support for graduate and undergraduate student all-hands events and related programs. Finally, this position provides scheduling, enrollment management, and curriculum support with the Undergraduate Advisor, to comply with department, college, and COCI requirements and other curricular processes and deadlines.
The position autonomously and proactively analyzes challenges and issues of diverse scope and determine solutions. Must have strong communication skills to accurately and sensitively convey information to students, faculty, staff and other university offices regarding graduate student affairs, admissions, visa procedures, curriculum, course scheduling, and ASEs. The position may oversee non-academic student employees. Interacts closely with the entire IEOR department team and Graduate Division units. Assignments are made by the Graduate Student Services Manager.

Responsibilities- Applies professional student services concepts in providing a variety of student services to the student population served by the organization, and to faculty and management within that organization.
- Academic Advising: Advises faculty on departmental / school / college and university policies and procedures; primary advisor for the 5th Year MS and terminal MS degrees; in collaboration with the Lead GSAO, reviews students' progress, assesses and evaluates student eligibility for graduation with regard to graduate degree requirement completion; identifies students with progression problems and recommends interventions; monitors graduate student services inbox and troubleshoots responses; leads and facilitates graduate student focus groups; familiar with and responsible for interpreting organization policies and advising students and faculty on student conduct; supports the undergraduate advisor in graduate-related curriculum planning requests and devises graduate curriculum planning in collaboration with chair / dean and faculty, and with other departments. Ensures students have appropriate resources and advises on a variety of topics: course registration, program requirements, and coordinates with other units as appropriate.
- Recruitment, Admissions, and Retention: Meets with and advises prospective applicants on necessary academic preparation; appropriateness of program as it pertains to the prospective applicant's goals; reviews MEng and MAnalytics applications utilizing in-depth admissions criteria knowledge and resources; initiates and arranges targeted student recruitment visits and present info sessions both in-person and virtually. Develops and leads program recruitment and admissions strategy and execution, including campus relations, partnership development, recruitment events, student engagement and outreach.
- Financial Aid: Oversees the administration, evaluation, and awarding of IEOR-specific professional and graduate student fellowships, grants, scholarships, and other awards; enters MAnalytics awards; advises students on financial aid options of the organization and extra-mural funding opportunities; supports the undergraduate advisor in funding survey, monitor eligibility requirements for Graduate Student Instructors (GSIs).
- Provides advice and assistance to students regarding complex U.S. visa and immigration procedures, compliance issues and employment eligibility; refer to BIO when necessary; manage MEng & MAnalytics OPT requests; manage visa-related letter requests from current graduate students and alumni.
- Events: Plans and implements complex, high-visibility student events, such as Commencement, Commencement Reception, New Student Orientations, PhD Visit Days, and Department Seminar. Participates in all hands departmental events, such as Advisory Board, Lab Showcase, and Industry Case Competitions.
- Administrative: Oversee graduate student building access; lead non-academic student employees; assist finance analyst in processing of event and expense reports and purchase orders; other administrative duties as needed.
- Professional Development: Maintain professional development and update working knowledge of admissions and student affairs administration through attendance and participation at campus and other training sessions, seminars, conferences, and events and active membership in campus and professional organizations, and networking with peers.
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
- Thorough knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
- Strong interpersonal skills, analytical skills, service orientation, active listening, critical thinking, attention to detail, ability to multi-task in a high-volume environment, organizational skills, effective verbal and written communication skills, sound judgment and decision-making.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaborate with individuals and groups from a wide range of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.
- Knowledge of specific computer application programs and knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
- Must demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to engage with and understand individuals from varied academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender, and ethnic backgrounds.
- Knowledge of complex U.S. visa and immigration procedures, compliance issues, and employment eligibility / authorization for international students and scholars.
- Ability in problem identification and reasoning; ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
- Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance.
- Experience in managing student programs and/or event planning.
- Ability to be resourceful, creative, innovative and flexible.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $61,200 to $83,200 yearly ($5,100.00 to $6,933.34 monthly). This is a 100% FTE career position eligible for full benefits. This position is FLSA Exempt and paid monthly.
Other InformationThis position is covered by the collective bargaining agreement between UAW (United Auto Workers) and the University of California Regents for SV.
