JOB PURPOSE

This role assists the Senior Associate Director for Project Delivery in overseeing projects, supporting staff, ensuring compliance with regulations, and contributing to planning, budgeting, and contract negotiations. The assistant director acts as backup to the Senior Associate Director, manages projects of various sizes and complexities, and leads a project team directly composed of a project manager and project engineer. Work is primarily focused on project leadership (80%) with technical contribution (20%).

CORE DUTIES

Perform the full project management cycle: initiating, planning, executing, monitoring, controlling, and closing. Lead and direct complex projects requiring high functional integration across multiple disciplines. Develop action plans and estimate resource requirements for personnel, labor, materials, and time. Facilitate discussions and negotiations to achieve consensus on project recommendations. Create and execute change‑management strategies and communication plans for project scope and stakeholder engagement. Manage project scope, risk, budget (up to $10M per project, cumulative >$10M), and resource allocation. Provide quality assurance oversight to ensure projects meet established standards and protocols. Provide quality control oversight to identify and correct defects in work and materials. Lead project accounting for day‑to‑day financial operations, tracking costs and payments across the portfolio.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education & Experience Bachelor's degree in a related field plus five years of project management experience with extensive size, complexity, and moderate performance risk, or equivalent education and experience. Preferred: technical education in engineering, architecture, construction management, or related fields. Preferred: certification in Project or Construction Management. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Highly effective written and oral communication skills for diverse audiences. Ability to assemble, engage, and lead cross‑functional teams. Demonstrated project integration skills: scope, time, cost, quality, human resources, communications, risk, and procurement. Balance customer expectations with project reality. Resilience, diplomacy, influence, relationship building, and problem‑solving in varied situations. Strong interpersonal and impact awareness. Depth of knowledge in technical discipline/domain required for project delivery.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Frequently stand, walk, sit, perform desk‑based computer work, and lift/push/pull objects up to 10 lbs. Occasionally lift objects up to 20 lbs and perform light manipulation. Rarely lift objects up to 40 lbs. Maintain a valid non‑commercial California Driver’s license. Auditory and visual acuity for environmental awareness and safety. Ability to climb ladders, scaffolding, and stairs as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work may occur in laboratories or outdoor environments; exposure to heat, cold, high voltage, radiation, chemicals, noise >80 dB, and other hazards. May involve vehicle operation, wearing personal protective equipment, and work on roofs or at heights >10 ft. May require extended hours, evenings, and weekends.

WORK STANDARDS

Comply with California Vehicle Code and Stanford University driving requirements for university business. Demonstrate interpersonal skills with Stanford colleagues, external partners, and clients. Promote a culture of safety: personal responsibility, safety communication, and adherence to training. Follow all applicable university policies and procedures, including the personnel policies outlined in the Administrative Guide.

PAY RANGE

Expected pay range: $175,000 – $185,000 per annum. The final offer will be based on scope, responsibilities, qualifications, department budget, internal equity, geography, and market comparables.
