JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Teacher - Secondary Electives FLSA STATUS: Exempt LOCATION: Assigned Building DAYS: 188 | CALENDAR B

JOB PURPOSE SUMMARY

The Secondary Elective Teacher is responsible for delivering high-quality instruction in one or more elective content areas that support student engagement, creativity, physical wellness, career readiness, language acquisition, artistic expression, and personal development. The teacher develops and implements standards‑aligned curriculum, monitors student progress, and creates a positive learning environment that promotes academic achievement, social‑emotional growth, and preparation for college, career, military service, and civic life. All employees of the district are expected to act with integrity, support organizational goals, utilize feedback to improve instructional performance, and commit to championing the needs of our students. Physical Education and Health Specific A successful Physical Education and Health Teacher promotes lifelong wellness, physical fitness, and healthy decision‑making through engaging and developmentally appropriate instruction. The teacher fosters teamwork, leadership, personal responsibility, and healthy lifestyle habits while providing students with the knowledge and skills necessary to support their physical, emotional, and social well‑being. Fine Arts Specific A successful Fine Arts Teacher inspires creativity, artistic expression, and appreciation for the arts through high‑quality visual and performing arts instruction. The teacher develops students’ technical skills, creative confidence, collaboration, and ability to communicate ideas through artistic mediums while fostering a lifelong appreciation of the arts. World Languages Specific A successful World Languages Teacher develops students’ proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and listening in the target language while fostering cultural awareness and global understanding. The teacher creates authentic language‑learning experiences that encourage communication, multilingualism, and appreciation of diverse perspectives. Student Success Programs Specific (AVID, Character Development, Credit Recovery) A successful Student Success Programs Teacher supports students in developing the academic, organizational, leadership, and personal skills necessary for success in school and beyond. Through mentoring, intervention, goal‑setting, and individualized support, the teacher promotes student achievement, character development, postsecondary readiness, and successful progress toward graduation. STEM / Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Specific A successful STEM or Project Lead the Way Teacher engages students in hands‑on, project‑based learning experiences that develop critical thinking, problem‑solving, innovation, and collaboration skills. The teacher connects academic concepts to real‑world applications while preparing students for future opportunities in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and related career pathways. Music Specific A successful Music Teacher develops students’ musical knowledge, performance skills, creativity, and appreciation of music through vocal and instrumental instruction. The teacher fosters discipline, collaboration, self‑expression, and confidence while preparing students for performances and cultivating a lifelong appreciation of music. Theatre Specific A successful Theatre Teacher develops students’ performance, communication, collaboration, and creative problem‑solving skills through acting, technical theatre, and production experiences. The teacher fosters confidence, artistic expression, and appreciation of the performing arts while providing opportunities for students to participate in productions and public performances. This position is intended for Secondary elective positions. Teachers assigned to core courses shall be assigned under TCH‑10

REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Master’s degree is preferred License / Certification Required Must possess or qualify and receive within 30 days of hire an appropriate Colorado educator license and endorsement applicable to the assigned teaching assignment. Work Experience Required Successful completion of an approved educator preparation program, student teaching experience, residency program, or equivalent experience preferred. Other Skills and Abilities Required Demonstrated content knowledge in assigned subject(s). Understanding of effective secondary instructional strategies. Strong interpersonal, communication, and classroom management skills. Ability to differentiate instruction and create inclusive learning environments for diverse student populations, including English Language Learners and students with disabilities. Knowledgeable of Colorado Academic Standards and curriculum frameworks. Bilingual endorsement preferred. Regular attendance is essential.

EVALUATION

Performance will be evaluated annually in accordance with provision of the Board’s policy on evaluation of professional personnel.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Instructional Strategies Develop and implement lesson plans aligned to the district curriculum. Design instruction to reflect student needs, learning styles, and interdisciplinary connections. Use varied teaching strategies, materials, and technology to support instruction. Deliver content in compliance with district, board, and state policies. Integrate technology effectively to enhance student engagement. Assess student learning preferences and plan accordingly. Collaborate with special education staff to modify curriculum for students with IEPs. Coordinate instructional goals and strategies with colleagues. Implement tiered instruction strategies to support students at all levels of readiness, particularly those identified for intervention through the MTSS process. Use assessment data to create flexible small groups and deliver targeted instruction based on identified student needs. Maintain accurate grading records and provide timely feedback to students and families. Support students in developing organizational, study, and self‑advocacy skills. Utilize student achievement and growth data to inform instructional planning. Prepare students for postsecondary opportunities including college, career, military, and workforce pathways as appropriate. Student Growth and Development Monitor student progress toward course standards, graduation requirements, and postsecondary readiness goals. Use data to inform instruction and interventions. Serve as a positive role model aligned with district values. Classroom Management and Organization Create a safe, inclusive, and organized learning environment. Maintain consistent behavioral expectations aligned with the Student Code of Conduct. Protect students and maintain care of equipment and materials. Communications Communicate professionally with students, families, staff, and the community. Foster strong relationships to support a positive school culture. Professional Growth and Development Engage in professional learning and development. Comply with CDE, district, and school policies. Attend meetings and serve on staff committees. Assist in selecting instructional resources. Complete all required documentation and reports accurately and on time. Policy, Reports and Law Comply with all applicable federal laws, including the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and Title I and Title III program requirements (as applicable), along with other national regulations governing K–12 public education. Comply with all State of Colorado education laws and regulations, including the Colorado READ Act (if applicable), the Exceptional Children’s Educational Act (ECEA) (if applicable), and all standards and guidelines established by the Colorado Department of Education (CDE). Follow all relevant Board of Education policies and Adams 14 Operational Policies related to curriculum, instruction, assessment, safety, student services, and professional conduct. Adhere to district-level procedures and school-based expectations regarding instruction, family communication, data reporting, and school improvement planning. Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or designated supervisor. Budget Responsibilities Maintain accurate records of instructional materials and supplies. Manage classroom resources responsibly.

CONTENT SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Physical Education and Health Deliver standards‑based instruction in physical fitness, health, wellness, and lifelong healthy habits. Promote teamwork, sportsmanship, leadership, and personal responsibility. Ensure student safety during physical activities and use of equipment. Assess student growth in physical fitness, movement skills, and health literacy. Coordinate school‑wide fitness, wellness, or athletic‑related activities as assigned. Fine Arts (Covers Art, Band, Music, Orchestra, Theatre) Deliver standards‑based instruction in visual or performing arts. Foster creativity, artistic expression, collaboration, and appreciation of the arts. Prepare students for performances, exhibitions, showcases, competitions, or public presentations as appropriate. Maintain specialized equipment, instruments, materials, and learning spaces. Support student participation in school and community arts opportunities. World Languages (Covers Spanish and future language offerings) Deliver instruction designed to develop reading, writing, speaking, and listening proficiency in the target language. Integrate cultural awareness and global perspectives into instruction. Utilize language acquisition strategies that promote communication and fluency. Assess language proficiency using district‑approved measures. Promote appreciation of diverse cultures and multilingualism. Student Success Programs (Covers AVID, Character Development, Credit Recovery) Support student goal‑setting, organization, self‑advocacy, and postsecondary readiness. Monitor academic progress and provide targeted interventions to support student success.
