Johnston County Public Schools Transportation Services - Smithfield, North Carolina Starting Date: Immediately Job Title Title: Mechanic III Site: Transportation Services Term: 12 Months Reports To: Director of Transportation Knowledge and Responsibilities Knowledge of school bus and vehicle operation and maintenance. Knowledge of the operating principles of internal combustion engines. Knowledge of methods for adjusting and repairing the electrical and generating systems of automotive equipment. Skill to perform manual tasks associated with engine maintenance, tire replacement and vehicle diagnostics. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Repair problems found during monthly inspections and routine maintenance. Respond to road calls and after‑hour calls as needed. Ability to perform major repairs on light‑ and heavy‑duty fleet vehicles. Other duties as assigned by the supervisor. Acceptable Training and Experience High school diploma or GED from a regionally or nationally accredited institution. Five years of experience in the repair and maintenance of automotive or diesel equipment. Technical training in automotive or diesel equipment is preferred. Four of seven ASEs (Diesel, Electrical, Brake & A/C) or possession of a 30‑day inspection certification for six years (preferred). Appropriate North Carolina driver’s license for the weight and type of vehicles operated as required by the Department of Motor Vehicles. Candidates must be able to obtain a CDL-B with P, S & T endorsements within 180 days of the start date. Candidates must also obtain a 30‑day inspection license by passing a state exam administered by the Department of Public Instruction within 180 days of the start date.
