Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: Surgical Intensive Care Unit Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12-hour Nights Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience License: Valid nursing license required Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS Must-Have: Candidates must have experience with surgical patients. Candidates must be able to read and interpret EKG strips. Candidates must be comfortable working with ventilators. Description: The role involves providing critical patient care in a Surgical Intensive Care Unit. The unit has a capacity of 10 beds. The typical nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:1 or 1:2. Common diagnoses include postoperative recoveries, primarily vascular surgeries. Experience with line placements, CRRT, and ECMO is beneficial. Shifts begin at 6:45 PM with bedside report. Self-scheduling is utilized but final schedules are managed by the Supervisor. Weekend work is required every other weekend, and holiday shifts will rotate with the core staff. Nurses can access their schedules from home and can make themselves available for extra shifts. Floating to other facilities may occur, though it is rare. The unit employs nurse aides as safety attendants. Charge nurses generally do not take patients but may provide relief for breaks. All staff must wear navy scrubs, and undershirts must be navy, white, or black. Scrub jackets are optional, but must also be navy. The emergency medical record system is Cerner. The unit is supported by a hospitalist or intensivist available in-house at all times. Respiratory Therapy and Pharmacy are available 24/7. Overtime and extra shifts may be available. Travelers are expected to work two of the three major holidays each year. A background check is required prior to employment. A specific exam must be completed as part of the hiring process.
