Lead LifeguardThe Lead Lifeguard is responsible for constant watch over a public swimming pool facility to enforce regulations and prevent accidents, assists swimmers in distress, and provides emergency and routine first aid. Takes the leadership role in customer service and emergency situations; and oversees and motivates the Lifeguards on duty.Reports to the Aquatics Coordinator, Aquatics Leader, and Head Guard.The following are examples of primary duties assigned to this position. Other related duties may be requested or required.Maintains constant watch over patrons in assigned areas and assists patrons in distress.Enforces rules and regulations of programs and facilities as mandated by MRD policies including in and around the pool, deck, and locker rooms.Administers first aid as necessary.Performs regular safety checks and keeps first aid supplies stocked.Accurately completes daily operation forms including maintenance request forms, chemical testing, cleaning checklists, and operation reports.Provides a safe and clean environment with adequate supervision by implementing guidelines from MRD and department policies and procedures manuals.Provides courteous and professional service to all program participants, facility users, MRD personnel and the public.Arrives on time and in proper attire/appearance as required by MRD guidelines.Accountable for all participants during working hours.Plans, leads and monitors lifeguards and swim assistants in the completion of daily schedule, zones of coverage, scanning and lifeguard rotation.Monitors behavior of lifeguards, swim assistants, and participants.Conducts set up and clean-up of facility and equipmentResponsible for either the opening, mid, or closing duties; as it relates to shift.Attends and participates at staff meetings and trainings including monthly in-service trainings, planned or random skills tests, and in-pool assessments.Performs emergency procedures as needed; performs as the lead on duty in emergency situations.Completes appropriate reports and forms as necessary.Performs general maintenance, including removing trash from the swimming pool, deck, locker rooms, floors, walls, storage, office, and other areas of the department.Performs daily slide inspections, facility inspections, and regular chemical checks; corrects and/or reports any potentially unsafe conditions to direct supervisor on duty.Conducts work tasks safely and in compliance with department safety standards and MRD policies and procedures.Communicates with participants and the public; discusses concerns and participation issues and provides solutions when appropriate;May prepare and conduct assigned portions of staff meetings and trainings for lifeguards and swim aides.Position Qualifications:2 years of lifeguard experience, preferred.Has sound judgment. Can decipher between life threatening and non-life threatening emergencies. Ability to perform lifeguarding procedures as stated by the American Red Cross.License and Certification:American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, CPR and First Aid required.American Red Cross WSI certification, preferred.Work Environment: Busy Rec Center environment with extensive public contact. Hours vary according to schedule, with evening, weekend, and holiday shifts. Work is constantly performed in a high-volume indoor/outdoor pool setting with constant exposure to loud noise and wet/humid conditions. Work includes periods of high activity and stress during emergency situations. Sufficient physical strength, stamina, and conditioning are needed to rescue swimmers in danger of drowning who may resist rescue.Physical Requirements: Work performed is physical in nature and involves sufficient physical strength and stamina:Constant sitting, standing, and walking throughout pool area to observe patrons' adherence to facility rules, and inspect for safety hazards.Constant near and far visual acuity to observe pools for possible troubled swimmers and safety hazards; constant audial acuity to be aware of troubled individual that may be out of line of sight.Frequent crouching/squatting, kneeling, and bending/twisting to perform pool maintenance and rescue duties; frequent climbing and balancing to ascent and descend elevated lifeguard stands.Frequent light grasps to hold rescue tubes throughout shift and safely use maintenance items; occasional firm grasp and fine motor skills to perform water testing, first aid, and other emergency functions.Occasional reaching overhead to pull up to lifeguard stands; frequent reaching below shoulder to perform pool maintenance and emergency functions.Occasional lifting of ten (10) pounds from floor to overhead to move equipment and supplies; occasional lifting of up to 75 pounds from floor to chest to assist in moving furniture, equipment, and patrons on backboards.Occasionally carry 75 pounds up to 50 feet and 50 pounds up to 100 feet to perform emergency rescues; occasionally push/pull 75 pounds to remove individuals from pool area in an emergency situation, and set up bleachers for events and lane ropes for lap swim.Benefits Include: Membership to the Community Recreation Center.Compensation: $17.95 - $19.49 per hourMission Statement: FUNdamentally improving lives by building community in fun, engaging ways, and by providing excellent parks and recreation facilities, activities, and services.EEO Statement: The Montrose Recreation District provides equal employment opportunities to all employees and applicants for employment and prohibits discrimination and harassment of any type without regard to race, color, religion, age, sex, national origin, disability status, genetics, protected veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or any other characteristic protected by federal, state, or local laws.
