DEPUTY SHERIFF TRAINEE

Special Salary Information Applicants who hold one of the following degrees from an accredited college or university may be eligible to receive the following base pay at the time of hire: AA/AS: $7,221 Monthly BA/BS: $7,624 Monthly HS Diploma: $7,298.77 Monthly AA/AS: $7,705.33 Monthly BA/BS: $8,135.36 Monthly Classification Standards These non‑sworn Deputy Sheriff Trainee classifications involve a formal law enforcement training program with classroom and practical instruction covering criminal law, evidence and investigation, patrol and traffic procedures, administration of justice, police/community relations, and jail custody and operations. The program is approved by the California Department of Corrections and the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training. Example of Duties of a Deputy Sheriff Testify in court. Make a forcible arrest. Search for and handle evidence/contraband. Use a firearm. Drive a county vehicle. Deputy Sheriffs in All Assignments Respond to public offenses with immediate danger to person or property or to prevent escape. Perform law enforcement administrative duties such as writing reports and maintaining logs. Maintain current knowledge of policies and procedures resulting from changes in laws. Take responsibility for all equipment and maintain proficiency. Respond to emergent situations such as natural disasters, civil unrest, or other tactical situations. Appear in court to testify in legal proceedings. Perform collateral duties as assigned. Engage in community‑based policing, interact with residents and collaborate on problem‑solving. Correctional or Court Facility Assignments Control, monitor, and supervise inmate conduct during meals, bathing, recreational activities, or work assignments per policies. Interpret and enforce correctional rules and regulations, e.g., California Code of Regulations, Minimum Standards for Local Detention Facilities, Title XV. Search inmates and inspect housing units for contraband. Monitor movement and maintain security of sentenced and pre‑sentenced inmates. Transport inmates to hospitals as needed. Maintain visual surveillance of inmates per policy. Respond to inmate disturbances or emergencies and take action per legal guidelines. Conduct, record, and report inmate counts. Respond to suspected criminal activity within a facility, conduct preliminary investigations, gather and maintain the chain of evidence. Provide jail orientation and respond to inmate inquiries. Oversee access to attorney rooms, visiting areas, and other controlled locations. Serve as a Superior Court bailiff, providing security for inmates and jurors. Serve writs, notices or other processes from superior courts. Transport inmates to and from courts, correctional facilities, or other locations. Patrol Station, Specialized Unit, or Other Non‑Custodial Assignments Patrol designated area in a patrol car to enforce laws and prevent or suppress crime. Respond to reports of suspected criminal activity such as assault, rape, homicide, or burglary. Investigate incidents, gather evidence, and make arrests as warranted. Respond to traffic accidents, assist victims, control traffic flow, take evidence, interview witnesses and victims, report findings. Transport inmates to or from courts, stations, emergency medical facilities or other correctional facilities. Conduct personnel background investigations and prepare reports. Guard and maintain security of jailed inmates in station jails. Specialized Duties Exercise technical supervision over other line personnel. Plan and conduct law enforcement courses and seminars. Supervise field training activities for patrol procedures. Coordinate operational activities such as scheduling patrol units and resolving community concerns. Conduct polygraph investigations of suspects, victims, or witnesses, and of applicants for Deputy Sheriff. Serve as a detective in specialized investigative units such as burglary, juvenile gang, child abuse, forgery, commercial crimes, vice, or narcotics. Highly Specialized Duties Conduct complex major investigations in homicide, arson, and fraud, requiring extensive technical knowledge. Perform duties such as flying a helicopter and making mountain and underwater rescues requiring extensive training and certification. Selection Requirements Age: Must be at least 19 ½ years of age at the time of application. Employment Eligibility: Must be legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law. Education: Graduation from an accredited high school, its equivalent, or higher per California Government Code Section 1031(e). License: A valid California Class “C” driver license or above at the time of application; out‑of‑state applicants must have a valid license from their state and obtain a California Class “C” driver license or above. Physical Classification: IV – Arduous (frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, etc.). Physical Requirements: Must be in good general physical condition, free from any medical condition that would interfere with satisfactory performance. Vision: 20/70 in each eye without correction, correctable to 20/30; soft contact lens wearers exempt if corrected to 20/30. Hearing: No greater than 25 dB loss in better ear; hearing loss limits per frequency range as specified. Work Conditions Work any shift. Work overtime and consecutive shifts. Work any day of the year. Work with people of any race or ethnicity. Work assignments with co‑workers of the opposite sex. Work in any location within the County of Los Angeles. Work assignments where there is risk of injury in performance of duties. Deal with hostile, irrational, or emotionally distraught individuals. Deal with volatile or life‑threatening situations.
