Job Summary Physical Sciences Laboratories (PSL) supports the effective and timely development and operation of national security systems through scientific research and the application of advanced technologies. PSL has more than 150 specialized laboratories used to test, analyze, and troubleshoot virtually every aspect of rocket and satellite system design, development, construction, deployment, and operation. The expertise of the laboratories’ technical staff allows PSL to stay abreast of new technological developments and program support issues associated with rapidly evolving space systems. The Remote Sensing Department specializes in the use of ground‑based astronomical telescopes and sensors to understand the characteristics of stars and satellites in support of the nation's space enterprise. We support the design and operation of unique instruments that explore new applications of imagery, polarization and hyperspectral sensors from visible light through long‑wave infrared for detailed characterization of resident space objects. We operate our own 1 meter and 40 cm telescopes and periodically operate at larger observatories including the Mt Lemmon Optical Facility and Air Force Maui Optical Station. Our results contribute to the daily calibration of overhead infrared capabilities across the Department of Defense and intelligence community. The Infrared Laboratory Technical Specialist (Technical Specialist III/ IV) will help maintain the department's cryogenic infrared spectrographs, keep them in proper calibration and assist astronomers and engineers in the development and testing of these instruments. The specialist will maintain a laboratory and associated equipment including electronics, optical tables, and cryogenic apparatus in accordance with corporate laboratory safety protocols. What You’ll Be Doing Operate and maintain unique optical and mechanical assemblies, electronic hardware, and test equipment used in laboratory experiments and remote astronomical observatory facilities Provide laboratory related assistance to engineers Ensure compliance with laboratory safety protocols Coordinate logistics for observing campaigns at remote facilities including Mt Lemmon and Maui Inspect and evaluate purchased and fabricated hardware against specifications Use electrical equipment such as meters, oscilloscopes, signal generators, network analyzer, spectrum analyzer, and similar equipment independently Perform electrical and mechanical assembly including connector fabrication and mating, soldering, and coordinating with machine shop Safely operate and monitor cryogenic equipment including dewars and vacuum pumps Support general laboratory activities including maintenance, cleanliness, organization, calibration, purchasing What You Need to be Successful Minimum Requirements for Infrared Laboratory Technical Specialist III include: High School Diploma or equivalent minimum of (4) years in a vocational trade school or apprenticeship program is required Advanced skills in special laboratory measurements to include power measurement, and basic signal analysis Competency in use of machine tools such as drill press, belt sander, and other mechanical and tools needed in the fabrication of electrical assemblies and test components Experience working with laboratory safety protocols Experience with optical components and testing Willingness to travel domestically up to 20% of the time This position requires ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance In addition to the above, the minimum requirements for Infrared Laboratory Technical Specialist IV include: Vocational trade school, Apprenticeship program or equivalent 10-12 years industry experience with High School Diploma is required Ability to quickly troubleshoot problems Works well in a team environment Strong organizational skills How You Can Stand Out It would be impressive if you have one or more of these: Bachelors or Masters degree in scientific or technical field is preferred Experience with CAD software Ability to interact with engineers in their area of technical knowledge, providing insights and suggestions A current and active security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government, is strongly preferred.
