Internal Medicine Section Chief

About the Position The Department of Medicine and Primary Care at the Illinois College of Osteopathic Medicine (IllinoisCOM) is seeking a dynamic and experienced physician educator and leader to serve as founding faculty in Internal Medicine. This full‑time position is open to candidates at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Full Professor. The role will develop and deliver the Internal Medicine curriculum, support faculty recruitment and development, and foster a student‑focused environment aligned with IllinoisCOM and The Chicago School mission and values. Responsibilities Leadership & Administration – Provide visionary leadership for Internal Medicine, lead curriculum development and assessment for clinical rotations, assist with preclinical courses, recruit, mentor, and develop faculty, maintain partnerships with hospitals and community organizations, and ensure compliance with accreditation standards. Teaching, Curriculum Development & Student Success – Oversee development and delivery of an innovative, interdisciplinary Internal Medicine curriculum, teach medical students using evidence‑based methods, provide student coaching and mentorship, integrate Internal Medicine content across the curriculum, and support student and faculty engagement in community outreach. Service – Represent the College at professional organizations and events, assist with student recruitment and community outreach, participate in college and university committees, advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion. Research & Scholarly Activity – Promote a culture of research, support faculty and student research, seek external funding opportunities, and ensure ethical and regulatory compliance for research activities. Qualifications Basic – DO or MD degree with board certification in a related specialty; at least five years of experience in medical education, residency training, or faculty leadership; demonstrated excellence in teaching, curriculum development, and student mentorship; strong leadership, communication, and problem‑solving skills; commitment to collaborative interprofessional education and integration of osteopathic principles; at least five years of clinical practice experience. Ideal – Experience as a department chair, program director, or senior faculty leader in an accredited medical school or residency program; strong background in educational innovation, simulation‑based training, and competency‑based assessment; established record of research and scholarly activity in primary care or medical education; demonstrated commitment to health equity, diversity, and inclusion in clinical practice and education. Position Details Salary range: $175,000 – $250,000, commensurate with experience and academic rank. Location: Chicago, IL (relocation assistance available for eligible candidates).
