SUPERVISING MECHANICAL INSPECTOR

BUILDINGS SAFETY ENGINEERING AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEPARTMENT Under general supervision, supervise a group of subordinate inspectors engaged in the enforcement of pertinent codes and city ordinances. The Supervising Mechanical Inspector also performs related work as . Examples of Duties Responsible for effective enforcement of departmental policies and regulations. Supervise a group of inspectors engaged in enforcement of pertinent codes and city ordinances. Plan, assign, and schedule the work assignments of inspectors. Oversee the inspection of construction plans and specifications. Review plans, specifications and reports of inspections. Advise subordinates on problems encountered and provide interpretation of pertinent legislation and departmental policies and regulations. Train new employees in their duties. Review the performance of new employees. Review and approve notices of violations. Conduct investigations and prepare reports on findings and recommendations. Examine plans and specifications for compliance with code requirements. Handle contacts with contractors, property owners, engineers, architects, and others relative to code requirements, notices of violations, and complaints. Make recommendations and assist in the preparation and revision of codes, ordinances, regulations, and reports. Hold office hearings. Conduct field checks of the activities of inspectors. Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or GED. Two (2) years of advanced training in mechanical engineering principles and construction methods attained through a recognized institute of higher education. Three (3) years of experience in inspectional activity in the trades or construction area within a municipality. Licensing and Certifications City of Detroit registration of Mechanical Contractor License with limited or unlimited heating or refrigeration service. Employees in this class will be required to provide and operate a motor vehicle on a reimbursed mileage basis; valid State of Michigan Operator License is. Successful applicants certified to positions in this class must acquire and maintain registration as a Mechanical Inspector with the State of Michigan. Candidates considered for placement in this classification may be subject to a Criminal Background Investigation based on the requirements of the position. Supplemental Information Interview:70% Evaluation of Training, Experience & Personal Qualifications:30% Total of Interview and Evaluation T.E.P:100% Additional points may be awarded for: Veteran Points: 0 – 15 points Detroit Residency Credit: 15 point Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of methods and practices utilized in the construction, installation and/or equipment operation phases in municipal inspectional activity. Knowledge of pertinent codes, city ordinances, departmental policies, regulations and standards. Skill in observing pertinent equipment in detail. Skill in reading and interpreting plans and specifications. Skill in physical strength, manual and mechanical dexterity. Skill in mechanical aptitude. Ability to plan and organize the work of a group of subordinate inspectors. Ability to prepare clear inspection reports. Ability to interact effectively with workers, supervisory personnel, contractors, owners and the public with tact and diplomacy. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to display initiative and resourcefulness to solve complicated and unusual problems of inspection. Distinguishing Characteristics Physical Demands Work involves climbing ladders and entering standard 10" x 16" and 11" x 15" work areas in and around roof top mechanical/refrigeration equipment, other narrow openings and crawl spaces, and to moving along narrow, exposed platforms and beams. Must be able to work in high and/or confined spaces. Work Environment Work is performed in a typical office environment, but may require some field work.
