Research Technician III/Research Associate

The Alaka`ina Foundation Family of Companies (FOCs) is looking for a Research Technician III/Research Associate to provide research support administration services for our government customer at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES

Conduct laboratory research in reference to established project management plan while adhering to federal, state, and local statutes, rules, and regulations. Adequately inspect, clean, sterilize, calibrate and maintain equipment. Equipment used for the generation, measurement, or assessment of data shall be adequately tested, calibrated and/or standardized. Maintain records of all inspection, maintenance, testing, calibration and/or standardizing operations. These records, containing the date of the operation, shall describe whether the maintenance operations were routine and follow the written standard operating procedure. Records will be kept of non-routine repairs performed on equipment as a result of failure and malfunction. Such records shall document the nature of the defect, how and when the defect was discovered, and any remedial action taken in response to the defect. Label all reagents and solutions in the laboratory areas to indicate identity, tighter or concentration, storage requirements, and expiration date. Deteriorated or outdated reagents and solutions shall not be used. For each research study, the contractor shall develop and submit for approval a written protocol that clearly indicates the objectives and all methods for the conduct of the study. Document all laboratory work performed in the interest of research protocol/proposal in laboratory notebook in accordance with best practices in local policy. Request supplies, chemicals, and equipment utilizing the current USAISR Research Management System (RMS) or system equivalent. Perform relevant assays that and provide data on quantitative and real‑time polymerase chain reaction, western blot, northern blot, southern blot, enzyme linked immunosorbent assay, deoxyribonucleic and ribonucleic acid extraction, protein extraction, flow cytometry, dynamic mechanical analysis, compression and tensile testing, shear and oscillatory rheometry, immunohistochemistry, thromboelastography (TEG), aggregometry, confocal microscopy, electron microscopy, cellular proliferation, cellular counting, cellular transfection, biomaterial characterization, high‑resolution respirometry, spectrophotometry, differential centrifugation, high performance liquid chromatography, transcriptomics, metabolomics, and hematologic testing. Use a variety of imaging equipment and quantitative software to analyze the results of molecular/biological procedures. Utilize varying statistical software programs to include JMP, GraphPad, SAS, SPSS, and Excel. Collect, and record experimental data, to include extensive use of computers and hemodynamic monitoring instruments, as well as creating and implementing new databases for new protocols. Perform data entry, database maintenance, and manipulation on various platforms and software applications of approved Department of Defense (DOD) technologies. Participate in interpretation of results, and prepare manuscripts, reports, and presentations for journal, abstract, book, or pamphlet publication. Actively participate in lectures, seminars, and conferences speaking or presenting research findings. Provide data analysis; assist with publications, and presentations in line with research efforts at varying times throughout the period of performance. Conduct animal laboratory research in reference to established SEP/protocol/proposal while adhering to federal, state, and local statutes, rules, and regulations. Laboratory work should be conducted in accordance with GLP, the Institute Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), and the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS). Prepare animal orders by submitting requests for purchase to government official using RMS, while scheduling operating rooms, vivarium, and veterinary support. Perform all aspects of critical care management of critically ill, mechanically ventilated animals in accordance with federal, state, and local policy. Operate a variety of clinical internal and external sensory devices for monitoring the vital signs of both large and small animals. Coordinate with animal research teams and serve as investigators (principal and/or associate) on animal protocols. Safely perform and oversee surgical trauma/hemorrhage protocols to include injury induction, treatment administration, collection of blood and tissue sample, and experimental data. Perform immunological and biochemical assays, cell‑based assays, ELISA. Perform large and small animal surgery to include both routine catheterizations, complex cardiovascular and neurological surgery, and microsurgery for both sterile and non‑sterile procedures. Conduct research using approved animal models to include, but not limited, to musculoskeletal trauma, wound infection, burn injury, sepsis, and poly‑trauma. Conduct research using animal species such as mouse, rat, rabbit, pig, goat, sheep, and guinea pig. Perform small animal anesthesia, surgical procedures, experimental treatment, euthanasia, tissue harvesting, and waste and remains disposal. Perform surgical procedures to include but not limited to cannulation, osteotomy, volumetric muscle loss, and burn injury. Assist and/or perform both sterile and non‑sterile surgical procedures on small animals, to include, but not limited to, placement of carotid and femoral catheters, percutaneous vascular lines, intravenous cut down for vascular access, implant telemetry devices, and microsurgery on rodents. Perform large animal surgical procedures, experimental treatment, tissue harvesting, and waste and remains disposal. Assist with and/or perform surgical procedures to include but not limited to cannulation, osteotomy, volumetric muscle loss, burn injury, penetrating abdominal injury, wireless telemetry placement, and skin excision. Assist with and/or perform minimally invasive procedures to include but not limited to probe placement, tourniquet use, blood collection, and tissue biopsy. Assist and/or perform sterile and non‑sterile surgical procedures on large animals to include but not limited to placement of percutaneous vascular lines, intravenous cut down for vascular access, placement of carotid and femoral catheters, and implantation of telemetry devices. Dispose of animal waste and remains IAW USAISR SOPs, policies, and safety guidelines. Perform post‑procedure follow‑up, recheck, pain assessments, drug administration, and sample collection. Provide support and management of research blood donor center operations to include: 1) donor screening, consenting, and collection of blood and blood products, 2) process specimens, analyze samples, and verify results, 3) general laboratory support and management, and 4) document and records management. Contractor will assist with developing, writing, and maintenance of SOPs and protocols along with correspondence with the IRB to ensure compliance with all regulations set by the Individual Review Board (IRB), Department of Defense (DOD), World Health Organization (WHO), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Army Human Research Protection Office (AHRPO) and the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB). Disseminate established policies, practices, and procedures to support staff and monitor the daily operation of various laboratory areas as assigned. Maintain SOPs for review and approval by Capability Area Manager and monitors compliance with DoD/Army safety procedures and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP), Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), Clinical Laboratory Improvement Program (CLIP), and the College of American Pathologist (CAP) regulations. Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED DEGREE/EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION

A bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college in biology, physiology, chemistry, or related field.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Three (3) years' experience in Biomedical Research with small and large animals.

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Trauma related biomedical research in a DoD environment highly desired. Any certification(s) through AALAS (i.e. - ALAT, LAT, and/or LATG) are a huge plus. Equipment experience with Rotem, Advia 2120i, TEG, Chronolog aggregometry, Calibrated automated Thrombography (CAT), iSTAT, AMNIS Imagestream imaging flow cytometer.
