Full time: Overtime exempt; approximately 40 hours per week average Salary: $70,000–$74,000, dependent on experience Benefits: Amargosa Conservancy offers a healthcare reimbursement plan providing reimbursement for up to $5,000 in qualifying healthcare expenses, as well as a relocation stipend and monthly remote work stipend. Reports to: Executive Director About the Amargosa Conservancy The Amargosa Conservancy works to protect the land, water, and communities of the Amargosa River Basin in eastern California and southern Nevada. The Amargosa River Basin is a remarkable desert watershed, connecting communities, public lands, wildlife habitat, and some of the most significant springs, wetlands, and desert river ecosystems in the Mojave Desert. Protecting this landscape requires working across boundaries and bringing together local communities, conservation partners, policymakers, agencies, scientists, and members of the public. Learn more about us at or on Instagram @amargosaconserv About the Position The Advocacy Manager will execute the Amargosa Conservancy’s (AC) advocacy campaigns, promoting land management and water policy which will further the organization’s mission. The Advocacy Manager will, in consultation with the Executive Director, implement strategic policy objectives. By engaging local communities, policymakers, and the broader public in the AC’s campaigns to protect the Amargosa River Basin, the Advocacy Manager will achieve tangible improvements to land management and water policy. This is a hands-on campaigns position at the intersection of community organizing, conservation policy, government relations, coalition building, and communications. The Advocacy Manager will move regularly between strategy and implementation, working directly with communities in and around the Amargosa River Basin while also engaging decision-makers and conservation partners at the local, state, and federal levels. Regular travel throughout the Basin is integral to this work, and dependable personal transportation is required. The position is well suited for someone who enjoys building relationships, communicating complex issues to different audiences, and turning conservation priorities into organized campaigns. Duties Include: Organizing at all levels with local communities in and near the Amargosa River Basin: Organize and facilitate community meetings and tours of focal resources; One-on-one meetings with policymakers and elected officials (local, state, and federal); Create opportunities for local community members and leaders to speak with the press and with state and national agencies and elected officials; Maintain consistent outreach to key stakeholders to cultivate strong long-term relationships. Organizing among members, supporters and the broader public: Author and promote petitions and other mechanisms for the public to weigh in on AC campaigns; Organize and facilitate events in Nevada and California to communicate AC campaigns to a broader public. Direct advocacy with state and federal agencies and elected officials: Meetings with staff at agencies to communicate the AC’s conservation priorities (may include travel to California, Nevada, Washington D.C., and other locations); Lobbying meetings with elected officials, to urge them to support the AC’s conservation priorities.* Communications: The Advocacy Manager will be the AC’s main contact for the press, writing press releases, opinion pieces, and direct pitches, while cultivating relationships with key journalists and ensuring that AC’s campaigns get as much press coverage as possible; Develop advocacy-related content for social media, e-blasts, and newsletters; Review and approve advocacy-related outgoing communications and media content. *Lobbying may comprise no more than 20% of the Advocacy Manager’s time. Assist in the development of grant proposals as needed. Information gathering: Keep abreast of news coverage regarding the AC’s priorities but also land management and water policy writ large; Monitor the Federal Register, the Bureau of Land Management’s ePlanning, the Nevada Department of Water Resources website, state legislative agendas, county commission/board of supervisors meeting agendas, and other relevant sources for actions which may impact AC’s conservation priorities. Coalitions: Organize and facilitate coalitions and plan and facilitate strategy calls as required; Organize smaller ad hoc coalitions on specific issues; Attend coalition and stakeholder meetings organized by partners; Work with partners to author sign-on letters to support AC campaigns and gather signatures from as broad a reach of NGOs as possible; Work with partners to drive attendance at public meetings or other events; Work with partners to increase the reach of action alerts. Work with Board members as assigned and partners to draft NEPA comment letters; Work with allies to determine when and if litigation is an appropriate tool to achieve the AC’s conservation priorities and make recommendations to the Executive Director.
