LAR Training Specialist

Position Overview The Laboratory Animal Resources (LAR) Training Specialist leads daily animal care, staff training, and regulatory record-keeping to support research and teaching at North Carolina State University. The role designs, implements, and tracks comprehensive training programs for staff, faculty, and students, ensuring proficiency in animal husbandry, handling, clinical techniques, and safety protocols. Key Responsibilities Develop and deliver hands‑on workshops, SOPs, and job aids for varied learning styles; identify competency gaps and provide corrective training. Assist faculty with veterinary teaching laboratories, demonstrating handling, restraints, blood collection, injections, and species‑specific production procedures. Maintain meticulous medical, census, and training records; update institutional SOPs and assist with billing and day‑to‑day species management. Conduct facility checks, delegate daily tasks, train student workers, and participate in the interview and hiring process. Provide direct, hands‑on animal husbandry and assist veterinary students across multiple species. Address compliance‑related training gaps in liaison with the IACUC and maintain accurate institutional databases. Perform other duties as assigned. Physical Demands Lift at least 70 lbs. and handle heavy bales of hay seasonally. Work around sick animals, hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, zoonotic diseases, and unpleasant odors. Work weekends and holidays as required; mandatory personnel position. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment or equivalent combination of training and experience from an accredited institution. Experience in animal husbandry and identifying signs of illness in all species housed within LAR. Experience training staff and developing institutional SOPs and job aids. Experience with a wide variety of species care. Preferred: AALAS or LATG certification; LATG certification is required for continued advancement.
