South High School (High‑Needs School) Job/FLSA Status: Full‑Time, Exempt Reports to: Principal and/or Designee Position summary To help students achieve maximum benefits from the educational opportunities offered to them in the schools. Role qualifications Must hold a current Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) or Educator License with Stipulations (ELS) with a teaching endorsement in a secondary content area. Learning Behavior Specialist (LBSI) endorsement is required to facilitate program serving only students with individualized education plans (IEP). Experience working with students who were unsuccessful in a traditional educational setting preferred. Position responsibilities Enrolls students in appropriate grade‑level curriculum using the district's digital learning platform. Plans a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students. Guides the learning process and supports students' successful completion of courses. Assesses the accomplishment of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required. Collects data and prepares course completion reports and other reports as requested by administration. Initiates contact with parents/guardians regularly and responds promptly, constructively and professionally to parent‑initiated contacts/concerns. Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of the students. Establishes a set of classroom behavioral expectations based on clearly defined goals or principles. Prepares for virtual programming and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of the administration. Communicates regularly with members of the Pupil Personnel Services Department. Works cooperatively with other school personnel to support students with identified needs and to support diverse learners. Meets and facilitates program in the locations and at the times designated. Supervises students outside of the classroom during passing periods. Prepares students for standardized tests required by the state. Attends all staff meetings and/or professional development sessions as allowed by contract. Adheres to the published policies and procedures of the District. Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities. Is consistent and fair in dealing with classroom disruptions. Maintains accurate and complete records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulation. Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct. Assists in the selection of resources, equipment, and other instructional materials. Performs any other related duties as requested by building administration. Essential skills and experience Ability to use digital learning platform Knowledge of best practices with an emphasis on engaging students in an asynchronous, virtual environment Ability to maintain a professional decorum when dealing with behavioral problems Knowledge of appropriate behavioral strategies when interacting with students Experience in and knowledge of goal setting, self‑reflection, and post‑secondary opportunities. Work environment: The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
