GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF JOB The Fall Student Intern – Commissioners’ Office provides a unique opportunity to gain firsthand experience in local government, public policy, and community engagement. Interns will work directly with staff on a range of administrative, research, and outreach projects. This will provide an opportunity to learn more about county functions and engage with work in the community. DUTIES Conduct research and/or analysis on specific projects or priorities, as assigned. Examples of special projects: affordable housing research and community outreach, strategic plan data review, grant opportunities, community grant research Draft briefing memo on assigned project that outlines findings and/or outcomes. Attend public meetings, community events, and internal briefings as appropriate and available during tenure. Examples: BOCC business meetings or study sessions, budget presentations, department briefings, etc. Organize and maintain any research, records, and databases. Deepen understanding of County functions and responsibilities. Present findings to relevant staff in formal presentation. REQUIREMENTS Skills, Abilities and Competencies Strong written and verbal communication skills. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a professional environment. Interest in government, community service, and public affairs. WORK ENVIRONMENT Work is generally confined to a standard office environment. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Spends 50% of the time sitting and 50% of the time either standing or walking. Occasionally lifts, carries, pulls or pushes up to 20 lbs. Occasionally uses cart, dolly, or other equipment to carry in excess of 20 lbs. Occasionally climbs, stoops, kneels, balances, reaches, crawls and crouches while performing office or work duties. Verbal and auditory capacity enabling constant interpersonal communication through automated devices, such as telephones, radios, and similar; and in public meetings and personal interactions. Constant use of eye, hand and finger coordination enabling the use of automated office machinery or equipment. Visual capacity enabling constant use of computer or other work-related equipment. Definitions Occasionally: Activity exists less than 1/3 of the time. Frequently: Activity exists between 1/3 and 2/3 of the time. Constantly: Activity exists more than 2/3 of the time.
