Senior Health Physicist (Senior Scientist)

Job Description Senior Scientist in the Radiological Control Department with extensive health physics experience is needed to implement the Radiological Control program and support project execution. The role involves operational health physics and technical advisement on radiological protection. Key Responsibilities Produce complex radiological survey plans, survey permits, and related technical documents. Author procedural and technical guidance documents. Serve as regulatory liaison for audits, dose investigations, and incident remediations. Manage functional elements of the radiological protection program. Mentor junior health physicists through coaching and professional development. Manage regulatory compliance for complex operations. Interface with management, projects, external agencies, and emergency response functions as a subject‑matter expert. Develop program metrics, performance indicators, and dashboards for radiological protection effectiveness and compliance trends. Implement cutting‑edge, pioneering solutions in the technical arena. Perform additional duties assigned by Radiological Control Management and other management. Complete special projects to meet internal and external customer expectations. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in a calculus‑based STEM field and at least five years of relevant experience, including at least three years as a health physicist. Professional certification (Certified Health Physicist) preferred; willingness to obtain certification is desired. Advanced knowledge of health‑physics principles, operational health physics, contamination control, airborne monitoring, and radiological area characterization. Strong oral and written communication skills, including technical report writing. Planning, organizational, and independent‑judgment skills to complete assignments efficiently. Interpersonal communication skills for effective professional interaction. Mathematical skill for interpreting complex data and regulations. Proficiency with Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Valid driver’s license. Work location: Nevada National Security Site, Mercury, Nevada (65 miles northwest of Las Vegas); forward areas may be required. Schedule: 4/10s (Monday‑Thursday); may be asked for on‑call duty and non‑standard hours. Additional Requirements DOE Q‑level security clearance (or ability to obtain). Background investigation, drug screening, and other security checks are required. Pre‑placement physical examination including drug screen. U.S. citizenship required; must be at least 18 years old.
