QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or GED Certificate. Previous experience as a custodian is desired, though not essential. Has met health requirements as specified in district personnel policy.

JOB GOAL:

Responsible for the proper and timely completion of all assigned cleaning, ground care, setup and moving, and painting tasks in accordance with established procedures.

GENERAL KNOWLEDGE BASE

Knowledge Of: Basic methods, materials, tools and equipment used in custodial work and routine maintenance. Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies. Proper lifting techniques.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Ability To: Perform routine custodial activities at an assigned school site or facility to maintain buildings, locker rooms and adjacent grounds areas in a clean, orderly and secure condition. Use cleaning materials, equipment and methods according to pre-determined standards. Learn and apply knowledge of the schedules, procedures and use of equipment and supplies used in custodial work. Learn appropriate safety precautions and procedures. Maintain tools and equipment signed in clean working order and provide proper security. Perform minor non-technical repairs. Observe and report need for maintenance and repair. Perform heavy physical labor. Understand and follow oral and written directions. Meet schedules and time lines. Communicate effectively with others. Inspect and assure the security of facilities during assigned shift. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Walk, bend, lift, push, and stand for extended periods of time. Walk extensively. Climb stairs. Walk in stooped position over a long period of time. Work outside under adverse conditions without any ill effects. Work inside building after heating/cooling is turned off. Work weekend shift, holidays, and provide "on-call" coverage. Performance Responsibilities Must practice safety precautions and be safety conscious at all times. Reports to immediate supervisor any items requiring maintenance and an unusual or unsafe condition. Performs cleaning and sanitation tasks in assigned areas in accordance with established procedures. Operates and maintains powered cleaning equipment such as floor scrubbing machines, other automatic scrubbers, wet/dry vacuums, carpet vacuums, carpet shampooers, pile brush vacuums, and pressure washers. Uses and maintains non-powered cleaning equipment such as mops, brooms, cleaning cloths, spray bottles, brushes and custodial carts. Performs grounds care tasks in assigned areas in accordance with established procedures. These tasks include, but are not limited to, mowing, edging, trimming, pruning, watering, fertilizing, reseeding, applying fungicides, herbicides, insecticides, and sterilants. In addition, performs regular policing tasks such as picking up trash, emptying trash containers, sweeping sidewalks, parking areas, and roadways; cleaning storm drains, catch basins, swales, and unclogging drains if they should become obstructed with trash and debris. Operates and maintains powered grounds care equipment such as mowers, edgers, trimmers, vacuum machines, blowers, sprayers, spreaders, and saws. Provides manual labor for a variety of tasks as directed by immediate supervisor. Manual labor tasks include moving furniture and equipment; setting up tables, chairs, exhibits and displays; loading and unloading trucks, etc. Uses and maintains non-powered grounds care equipment such as shovels, axes, slings, hoes, wheelbarrows, saws, trimmers, hedge trimmers, trash pickup stick, trash sack or trash container. Moves office and school furniture and equipment as required to perform assigned cleaning and grounds care work tasks. Participates in off-shift, weekend, holiday, and "on-call" coverage. Demonstrates loyalty and dedication to the purposes and goals of the Ohio County Schools. Performs other duties as directed by immediate supervisor.
