ENVIRONMETNAL HEALTH SPECIALIST I

Position Overview The Illinois Department of Public Health is seeking an Environmental Health Specialist. The role involves traveling to conduct investigations, collect samples, respond to complaints, and produce detailed technical reports for supervisory review. Essential Functions Work under immediate supervision. Prepare routine reports on investigation findings, sample reports, and corrective actions required to comply with applicable mandates and regulations. Participate in conferences, consultations, and corrective action planning with owners, the public, program partners, and regulated industry related to applicable environmental programs. Attend and complete mandatory knowledge-based and practical training required by the Office of Health Protection standard operating procedures and program requirements for regional program activities. Perform other duties as required or assigned, reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college with a minimum of 30 semester hours in the physical and/or biological sciences. Preferred Qualifications At least six months of experience applying knowledge of local, state, and federal environmental health and public health laws and regulations. At least six months of experience conducting environmental health regulatory assessments and inspections at regulated entities. At least six months of experience writing inspection reports and communications to the public and regulated entities. At least six months of experience applying knowledge of general environmental health sanitation principles and practices. At least six months of experience in environmental field sampling equipment and testing techniques. At least six months of experience using Microsoft software products including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc. Conditions of Employment Requires the ability to travel extensively within the state. Requires a current and valid driver’s license. Subject to revolving door restrictions per 5 ILCS 430/5-45. Required to file a Statement of Economic Interest and a Supplemental Statement of Economic Interest with the Office of the Secretary of State and the Executive Ethics Commission.
