Director Clinical Risk Management

Position Summary The Director of Clinical Risk Management plays a critical role in the identification, management, and mitigation of clinical risks for the Health First Integrated Delivery Network (IDN). The Director protects and enhances clinical services, patient, employee, and visitor safety through development and implementation of clinical risk management and safety programs that mitigate risk and promote compliance with applicable clinical standards and best practices. The Director works closely with Corporate Legal, Claims, Quality, Safety, and entity Operational leadership to identify and mitigate clinical risk and to fully comply with related accreditation and regulatory requirements. Primary Accountabilities Educate and work collaboratively with medical staff, administration, and associates to mitigate clinical risk and comply with legal and regulatory requirements in a transparent, honest, and respectful way. Maintain good working relationships with internal stakeholders, leadership, patients and families, community organizations, accreditation entities, and various federal, state, local and regulatory agencies (e.g., AHCA, Department of Health); serve as primary liaison, in collaboration with the System Vice President of Patient Safety and Clinical Risk Management, for surveys, investigations, inquiries, and reporting. Prepare internal clinical risk trend reports for organizational leadership; develop risk-related policies and standard operating procedures, regularly update and review. Identify incidents reportable to the state as “Code 15” reports and ensure timely submission to the Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA); prepare annual risk management report of incidents, and other required investigative reports to AHCA or other regulatory agencies. Collaborate with Legal and/or Claims Management staff to identify all incidents that may present legal liability or expose the organization to litigation so that these may be reported to liability insurers; assist Claims Management in gathering risk management information related to incidents that present legal liability and as requested by attorneys. Oversee all disclosures of adverse events to patients, in coordination with Claims Management and System Legal Counsel; supervise investigation and processing of patient bill write‑off requests related to adverse events or clinical services. Maintain an electronic incident reporting system and associated workflow, enabling all healthcare providers and associates to report injuries and adverse incidents electronically. Ensure clinical risk management staff educate all clinical staff, physicians, and other stakeholders on their affirmative duty to report incidents and participate in risk investigation and mitigation activities. Develop innovative approaches to reduce the frequency and severity of clinical risk incidents, including serious safety events, precursor safety events, good catches, near misses, and visitor/volunteer injuries. Direct and manage the regular and systematic review of all incident reports to identify trends by time, place, or person and design preventive measures; identify and mitigate risk through review of medical staff peer review issues, patient/family grievances, committee minutes, third‑party reports, and administrative or associate referrals; oversee appropriate review of events including Root Cause Analysis, Debriefs, FMEAs, etc. Leadership Accountabilities Define and communicate a clear, compelling vision for the team that ties into the mission and vision of Health First and inspire the team to achieve that vision. Provide leadership, motivation, coaching, feedback, and support to foster growth and development of an effective, high‑performing team. Lead change through effective communication, explaining the connection and value to the organization, creating stronger buy‑in and urgency, while understanding impact to the team to obtain commitment. Demonstrate openness to hearing diverse ideas and thoughts; create a sense of inclusivity and encourage collaboration across teams to break down silos and meet the team’s and organization’s goals. Recruit, select, grow, and retain highly engaged, high‑performing, diverse and inclusive associates. Display strong strategic and financial acumen in areas of responsibility aligned with the organization’s strategic objectives. Minimum Qualifications Education: Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) or a relevant field. Work Experience: Four (4) years’ experience, including two (2) years of nursing experience in a hospital setting and two (2) years in a people‑leadership position. Licensure: Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in the State of Florida or endorsement. Certification: Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) within one (1) year of start date and maintained thereafter. Skills & Knowledge & Abilities: Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and electronic health record system. Ability to provide 24/7 on‑call Risk Management coverage for the organization, as needed. Knowledge of tort law, state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to health care, and healthcare accreditation standards. Excellent leadership, organizational, oral, and written communication skills. Excellent interpersonal relationship skills. Ability to relate well with all customers and handle high‑stress situations, defusing them and maintaining a calm professional demeanor. Excellent judgment in difficult situations. Ability to assess potential liability situations immediately and react appropriately. Excellent negotiating skills. Preferred Qualifications Education: Master’s degree. Work Experience: Clinical Risk Management or nursing leadership experience, including two (2) years in a multifaceted large healthcare system. Certification: Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM). Skills & Knowledge & Abilities: Experience with incident reporting system management. Physical Requirements Majority of time involves sitting or standing; occasional walking, bending, and stooping. Long periods of computer use at workstation. Light work that may include lifting or moving objects up to 20 pounds with or without assistance. May be exposed to indoor environments with varied temperatures, air quality, lighting, and/or low to moderate noise. Communicating with others to exchange information. Visual acuity and hand‑eye coordination to perform tasks. Workspace may vary from open to confined. May require travel to various facilities within and beyond county perimeter; may require use of a personal vehicle.
