Stroger, Jr. Hospital Department: Anesthesiology & Pain Management Job Summary The Attending Physician, General Anesthesiology & Pain Management will be responsible for patient care, resident/fellow training, daily administrative duties, and conducting quality assurance projects throughout the Cook County Health system. The majority of the physician’s time will be devoted to patient care across hospitalized and ambulatory settings. Typical Duties Provides anesthetic and pain management care throughout the hospital, meeting and exceeding compliance standards. Provides a complete range of anesthetic care, including pre‑operative assessment, intra‑operative administration and monitoring, and post‑anesthesia care in compliance with national Joint Commission standards. Works independently, supervises residents/fellows, and provides medical direction to Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs). Provides anesthesia‑related care in all dedicated operating room areas and related units such as Obstetrics, Post‑Anesthesia Care Unit, ICUs, and Wards. Examines patients, obtains medical history, and uses diagnostic tests to determine risk during surgical and other procedures. Coordinates and directs clinical work during procedures with nurses, residents/fellows, CRNAs, medical technicians, and other health care providers. Administers anesthetic or sedation using local, regional, general, or Monitored Anesthesia Care (MAC) techniques. Co‑ordinates anesthetic administration with surgeons during operating room procedures. Provides and maintains life support and airway management as needed, and helps prepare patients for emergency surgery. Determines when patients have adequately recovered for transfer to ICU or discharge home following surgery. Works required daily hours and takes first in‑house call as well as second through fifth calls based on OR needs. Performs all other related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical college or university. Licensed as a physician in the State of Illinois, or ability to obtain license prior to employment. Completed Anesthesiology Residency training and Fellowship in Pain Management. Board certified or board eligible in Anesthesiology by the American Board of Anesthesiologists (ABA). Active Illinois Controlled Substance License. Active Drug Enforcement Agency License. Active Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification from the American Heart Association. Preferred Qualifications Two (2) years of experience in an academic program or fellowship training. One (1) year experience with fluoroscopic‑guided techniques. Board certified in Pain Management. Proficiency with ultrasound. Proficiency in trials and permanent implants of SCS and intrathecal pumps. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics Thorough knowledge of HIPAA for confidential patient information. Strong knowledge base in anesthesiology and pain management with participation in program development. Proficiency in safe blood and blood product administration. Excellent interpersonal communication skills and ability to establish rapport with families. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Strong decision‑making skills. Excellent organizational skills. Ability to work required daily hours and multiple calls as needed. Ability to build relationships within the organization and represent the health system externally. Ability to prepare and present reports effectively. Ability to exercise discretion and make wise decisions. Excellent teaching and mentoring skills for residents and interns. Ability to handle multiple simultaneous demands and meet all required deadlines. Ability to maintain a professional demeanor when challenged. Ability to perform clinical duties as an anesthesiologist. Sensitivity and respect when caring for patients and interacting with diverse audiences. Physical and Environmental Demands This position requires adherence to all hospital safety requirements, including personal protective equipment, hand hygiene, and work‑practice controls.
