ROLE & PURPOSE

School based physical therapists are related service providers who focus specifically on assisting the student in accessing and participating in their educational environment

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION

• Valid Texas license as a physical therapist granted by the Texas Board of Physical Therapy Examiners

EXPERIENCE

• One year successful experience in Pediatric Physical Therapy

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES

I. INSTRUCTIONAL MANAGEMENT

• Evaluate eligible students utilizing tools and skills unique to physical therapy. These may include functional, standardized assessments, observation, checklists, review of previous evaluations/data, and input from parent and teaching staff
• Use APTA Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice to guide decisions
• Provide a comprehensive written report which reflects strengths and barriers to student participation in the educational environment
• Collaborate with IEP team to establish goals and objectives based on the student's needs as determined by the PT evaluation
• Provide adaptive equipment for the student/school, train school personnel and/or parents regarding use and care of equipment

II. SCHOOL/ORGANIZATIONAL CLIMATE

• Provide physical therapy intervention strategies to support the student's Individual Education Plan
• Work collaboratively with colleagues and peers, related services providers and teachers to plan and align physical therapy services

III. SCHOOL/ORGANIZATIONAL IMPROVEMENT

• Order or modify adaptive equipment and monitor use and care of these devices
• Participate in staff development.
• Attend and participate in department meetings.

IV. ADMINISTRATION & FISCAL/FACILITIES MANAGEMENT

• Consult with and make recommendations to school personnel and parents regarding intervention strategies and equipment needs
• Order or modify adaptive equipment/assistive technology related to the student's IEP
• Monitor use and care of these devices
• Prepare and submit requests
• Utilize scheduling and time management techniques in order to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.

V. STUDENT MANAGEMENT

• Maintain appropriate and timely documentation and record keeping necessary for the development and implementation of physical therapy services as determined by the Department of Special Education and SHARS
• SHARS / MAC / RMTS: Participate in the district's Medicaid initiatives. Arlington ISD participates in the School Health and Related Services (SHARS) and MAC programs, which allow the district to request Medicaid reimbursement for certain health-related services provided. The ARD/IEP committee determines SHARS services.
• SHARS Providers: Train, provide, and document billable SHARS/direct medical services provided to students with SHARS services ordered in their IEP.
• RMTS: If selected, participate in Random Moment in Time Study (RMTS).
• MAC: Directly support the provision of services covered under the Texas Medicaid State Plan; provide or supervise direct medical services as stated in the IEP.

VI. SCHOOL/COMMUNITY RELATIONS

• Participate in team meetings and parents conference as necessary
• Serve as a non-voting member of the Admission, Review and Dismissal committee as necessary

VII. PROFESSIONAL GROWTH & DEVELOPMENT

• Participate in continuing education for professional development based on best practice in the public school setting and approved by TPTA and/or APTA
• Stay current with evidence based research
• Attend required conferences and training.

VIII. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Supervise PT/PTA students from an accredited university

IX. OTHER DUTIES

• Any other responsibilities as designated by the Licensed Supervisor, Program Coordinator, and/or Director of Special Education.

• Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment.
• Posture: Moderate standing; occasional kneeling, squatting, bending, and stooping
• Motion: Moderate walking
• Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds)
• Environment: Work inside and outside (exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather); exposure to noise
• Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress, with frequent interruptions.
