Position Summary An Opportunity to Join our Remarkable Care Team as a Medical Laboratory Scientist in the Core Lab Department awaits you. Under general supervision, the candidate performs qualitative and quantitative laboratory tests on patient specimens, analyzes test results, prepares samples, and demonstrates unit/area-designated competencies. Employment Details Employment Type: Full time Shift: Evening Shift Required Education, Experience & Certification Education: Baccalaureate degree in Medical Technology or Medical Laboratory Science from an accredited institution. Experience: Relevant work experience in a medical laboratory preferred. Certification: Medical Technologist (MT)/Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS – ASCP, or NCLS) certification preferred. Alternative Titles: Medical Lab Scientist, Medical Technologist, Clinical Laboratory Scientist Required Skills & Abilities Interpersonal: Communicate effectively with physicians, nursing unit personnel and other clinic staff. Analytical: Interpret and analyze test results, particularly complex or unusual procedures, and determine appropriate actions for abnormal findings. Attention to Detail: Concentrate and maintain accuracy while performing laboratory duties. Organizational: Prioritize a high volume of samples and ensure timely results according to priority status. Record or enter laboratory results into computer systems. Notify supervisor of spurious, unusual or highly abnormal results before release. Report stat and highly abnormal or unexpected results promptly. Compare current results with previous patient data when indicated. Perform quality control, equipment maintenance, calibration, and operate laboratory equipment. Notify appropriate personnel of specimen or equipment problems. Prepare standards, reagents, and materials for testing. Communicate results and clarify requests with nursing units or client office personnel. Participate in department meetings, continuing education, in-service and quality assurance programs. Provide patient care that is age-appropriate, developmental, and culturally sensitive. Assist in training technologists, technicians, lab assistants, and clerical staff. Assume Technician-in-Charge duties as assigned. Maintain professional relationships and handle conflict constructively. Identify and resolve problems, offer solutions, and participate in their resolution. Maintain confidentiality of patient and hospital information, sharing only with appropriate personnel. Act in accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values of SJMHS.
