Our mission is guided by our Strategic Principles and has three critical components; patient care, education and research that together enhance our contribution to society.Job SummaryThe Clinical Pharmacist Generalist will rotate through a variety of roles and locations delivering comprehensive pharmaceutical care including drug distribution to support excellent patient care. This role will include both service-based clinical pharmacist (de-centralized) and medication distribution (centralized) responsibilities. In the service-based role, the pharmacist will support 3-4 care teams, actively participate in multidisciplinary patient rounds, review and verify medication orders, and provide dosage adjustments per pharmacy policies for anticoagulation, pharmacokinetic antimicrobials, renally dosed medications and parenteral nutrition. Additional responsibilities include conducting daily profile reviews, and serving as preceptor for University of Michigan College of Pharmacy IPPE and APPE students. The pharmacist may also rotate through the operating room satellite pharmacy, serving as a liaison between the operating room pharmacy, surgeons and PACU with responsibilities including peri-operative medication management, narcotic control and distribution. In the centralized medication distribution role, the pharmacist will be responsible for order verification, code response, clinical inquiry response, product verification, medication distribution oversight, technician functional supervision, automation systems, and inventory control. Responsibilities*CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:After successful orientation and training, the pharmacist generalist will rotate through a variety of roles and locations spending time as a service-based clinical pharmacist (de-centralized), and time in a medication distribution (centralized) role. We offer pharmacy services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. It is expected that this position will be afternoon shift including weekends and holidays.Specific Centralized and Decentralized responsibilities may include (but are not limited to) the following:Service Based, Team Pharmacist: Activities include interdisciplinary rounding, comprehensive profile reviews, pharmacokinetic monitoring and dosing, anticoagulation therapy monitoring and dosing, discharge counseling, renal dosing, parenteral nutrition monitoring and adjustments, pharmacy student precepting, and nurse/prescriber education.D. Dan and Betty Kahn Health Care Pavilion Main Pharmacy and University Hospital Central Pharmacy: Operational and clinical activities that include order verification, code response, clinical inquiry response, product verification, medication distribution oversight, technician management, pharmacy student precepting, Pyxis management, and inventory control.Operating Room Pharmacy Satellites: Peri-operative medication management (i.e. antimicrobial prophylaxis, support for pain management, anticoagulants and blood factors) and narcotic control and distribution including quality control to maintain compliance with regulatory standards and quality measures. Other Pharmacy Satellites (pending department need) - (Emergency Department, OR, Clean Room, Cardiovascular Center): Activities include central order verification, medication question triage, product compounding and verification, investigational drug management, controlled substances management, and functional supervision of technical staff working in their area including completion of job assignments and assuring adherence to institutional policies and procedures.Able to prioritize daily responsibilities with accuracy and dependabilityDemonstrate and apply excellent teamwork and communication skillsEffectively communicate with pharmacy team members, other healthcare professionals, employees, patients, and visitorsAccurately and efficiently interpret and process medication orders, labels, and documentation.TeachingPharmacists serve as preceptors for the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy students, for both Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPEs) and Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPEs). These include precepting in both operational and clinical pharmacist roles.Quality ImprovementDevelop and implement quality improvement measures and process improvements to improve patient care and pharmacy servicesSUPERVISION RECEIVED:Functional supervision is received from a Pharmacy Manager/Assistant Director, or Pharmacy Manager/Assistant Director designee. Administrative supervision is received from a Pharmacy Manager/Assistant Director, or other designated official.Required Qualifications*Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from an accredited College of Pharmacy or equivalent combination of education and experienceCurrent licensure as a registered pharmacist by the State of Michigan Board of PharmacyMichigan Controlled Substance License to practice pharmacy in the State of Michigan, or eligibility to become licensed within 60 days of employment start dateOther: Ability to perform a variety of manual dexterity movements, including keyboarding and active participation in codes (e.g. sterile product preparation). Demonstrates effective use of computers and applications (e.g. MS Word, Excel, Outlook). Fluency in reading, writing, and speaking English.Ability to meet all the above qualifications and responsibilities with or without reasonable accommodationACLS certification (certification available to be obtained once hired through Michigan Medicine)Desired Qualifications*Completion of an ASHP accredited PGY1 residency and/or BCPS certification.Recent inpatient clinical hospital practice experience including participation in multi-disciplinary rounds, direct patient care and education, and product verification with a range of medications and patient populations similar to those at an academic medical center.Active membership in professional organizations.Modes of WorkPositions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Dan and Betty Kahn Health Care Pavilion is a new inpatient facility set to open in November 2025, designed to increase access to care across U-M Health. The facility will directly connect to the Cardiovascular Center and University Hospital, and will feature 264 private inpatient rooms including general/telemetry, Cardiac Intensive Care and Neuro Critical Care units, along with 20 operating rooms, 2 non-invasive radiology suites, and 1 vascular access interventional radiology space. The Clinical Pharmacist Generalist may work out of the Pavilion, University Hospital and/or the Cardiovascular Center.Underfill StatementThis position may be underfilled at a lower classification depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate.Background ScreeningMichigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.
