Ventura County Health Care Agency Registered Nurse Position

The Ventura County Health Care Agency is seeking experienced Registered Nurses for the Float Unit to provide staffing support in the Medical Surgical, Telemetry, and Critical Care specialty areas at Ventura County Medical Center (VCMC) and/or Santa Paula Hospital.

The Registered Nurse II is the experienced-level classification in professional nursing and performs the full range of nursing duties while exercising independent clinical judgment within established nursing standards, procedures, and physician orders. Incumbents are expected to work at the full scope of their licensure, applying intermediate assessment skills, sound clinical decision-making, and adherence to patient privacy, confidentiality, and security guidelines. As experience increases, they are expected to perform their duties with a decreasing amount of supervision.

The ideal candidate is a compassionate and clinically proficient Registered Nurse with recent acute care hospital experience. They demonstrate strong assessment, critical thinking, and patient care skills, with a thorough knowledge of professional nursing practices, medications, medical terminology, and hospital procedures. The successful candidate effectively plans, implements, evaluates, and documents patient care; monitors patient conditions; administers treatments and medications; and collaborates with physicians and interdisciplinary healthcare teams to ensure high-quality patient outcomes. They are able to prioritize responsibilities in a fast-paced environment, exercise sound clinical judgment, maintain patient confidentiality, communicate effectively, and establish positive relationships with patients, families, and staff. They also support the training of new and ancillary personnel, maintain required certifications, and adapt to varying assignments, departments, and shifts while consistently providing safe, patient-centered care.

Float Pool assignments will be flexibly staffed within a specialty unit or cluster providing additional support across both VCMC and Santa Paula Hospital campuses. Candidates assigned to Float Pool will not be regularly assigned to any designated unit, but instead will work in two (2) specialty units/clusters designated as:

1. Medical/Surgery (MS3), Telemetry Units (MS1 & ICU1) & Admitted patients holding in ED (ED holds)
2. Intensive Care Unit, DOU, PACU, IR, Admitted patients holding in ED (ED holds)

Depending upon area of assignment, additional specialty experience and/or certification(s) may be required.

The County of Ventura offers an attractive compensation and benefits package, subject to eligibility requirements, that includes:

• Registered Nurse II ($54.70 - $65.42 per hour):
• Educational/Bilingual Incentive: Incumbents may be eligible for an educational incentive of 2.5%, 3.5%, or 5% based on completion of an Associate's, Bachelor's, or Master's degree that is not required for the classification. Incumbents may also be eligible for bilingual incentives depending upon operational need and certification of skill.
• Certification Pay: $0.813 per hour based on scheduled work week hours for each qualified certification up to a maximum of five (5) certifications. One of the five certifications may be paid at $2.00 per hour for a National Certification.
• Continuous County Service Incentive Pay: 1% for 7 years, 1.25% for 12 years and 1.5% for 17 years
• Float Nurse Premium Pay: $3.50 per hour
• Flexible Credit Allowance: Biweekly contribution towards medical, dental, and/or vision insurance from authorized plans.
• Pension Plan: Participate in the County's defined benefit pension plan that provides lifetime payments to retirees. Members are "vested" after attaining five years of retirement service credit. If eligible, you may establish reciprocity with other public retirement systems such as CalPERS.
• Holidays: 13 paid days per year which includes a scheduled floating holiday.

Per Diem Registered Nurse II ($55.42 - $73.14 per hour):

• Educational/Bilingual Incentive: Possible educational incentive of $1.25 or $1.75 based on completion of a Bachelor's or Master's degree. Incumbents may also be eligible for bilingual incentives depending upon operational need and certification of skill.
• Certification Pay: $0.813 per hour based on scheduled work week hours for each qualified certification up to a maximum of five (5) certifications.
• Evening Shift Differential: 7.5%
• Night Shift Differential: 15%
• Weekend Shift Differential: $2.00 per hour
• Charge Nurse Premium Pay: $1.00 per hour
• Float Nurse Premium Pay: $2.50 per hour
• Standby Premium Pay: of regular hourly wage or Federal minimum wage (whichever is greater)
• Health Care Plan: Per Diem employees may purchase the Ventura County Health Care Plan (VCHCP) at their own expense.

Health Care Agency Ventura County Medical Center and Santa Paula Hospital Registered Nurse II & Per Diem Registered Nurse II are represented by the California Nurses Association (CNA) and are eligible for overtime compensation. Salary placement will be determined according to the current California Nurses' Association (CNA) memorandum of agreement. The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill current and future Regular (including Temporary and Fixed-term), Intermittent, and Extra Help vacancies for this position only. There is currently one (1) regular, full-time vacancy.

Tentative Schedule Opening Date: 6/26/2026. Closing Date: Continuous and may close at any time; therefore, the schedule for the remainder of the process will depend upon when we receive a sufficient number of qualified applications to meet business needs.

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

• Uses the full scope of the Nurse Practice Act to assess, plan, organize, and provide nursing care to assigned patients;
• Follows prescribed doctors' orders concerning treatments and medications;
• Documents patient treatment and dispensing; makes patient observations; records and reports on all pertinent information, including changes in patient condition and general progress;
• Provides follow-through on judgment within the scope of accepted nursing practice;
• Assists doctors in examination and treatment;
• Provides unit organization and is responsible for completion of all delegated and indicated nursing duties by the end of the assigned shift;
• Assists in training, supervision and evaluation of new and ancillary personnel;
• Maintains current knowledge of nursing care developments and therapeutic measures; attends department in-services and staff development programs;
• May participate in quality assurance/utilization review or other non-direct patient care nursing assignments;
• May interpret and monitor cardiac rhythms depending on area of assignment; and
• Performs other related duties as required.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE Requires at least six (6) months of recent acute care nursing experience in an acute hospital setting or completion of the Ventura County Medical Center *competency requirements as evaluated and approved by the Nurse Executive. *These competency requirements are in conformance with the California Board of Registered Nurses nursing requirements.

• Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing.
• Must possess and maintain a current, valid license as a Registered Nurse issued by the State of California or Registered Nurse licensure in another state with California licensure pending.
• Must have six (6) months of full-time professional registered nursing experience in at least one of the following specialties:
• Definitive Observation Unit (DOU) / Intermediate Care (IMC) / Step-Down Unit
• Emergency Department (ER)
• Inpatient Psychiatric Unit (IPU)
• Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
• Medical-Surgical (Med Surg)
