Reports To: Director of Resident Services

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt | Full-Time

Location: Residences on Acoma and Providence at the Heights

In-person position at the Residences on Acoma/ Providence at the Heights sites.

Job Summary

The Peer Support Specialist provides a consistent presence at the front desk while also delivering Medicaid-billable peer-based support to residents at ACOMA. This role integrates front desk coverage into the peer function, ensuring the safety and security of the property while fostering a trauma-informed, recovery-oriented environment. Two staff are present at the front desk at all times, allowing one to focus on direct peer engagement during non-peak hours. The individual in this position draws on lived experience to build trust and motivate residents, offering encouragement, guidance, and access to services.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain a courteous and consistent presence at the front desk throughout shift; staff must always remain awake and on-site.
  • Monitor building access, verify visitor identification, and ensure residents escort their guests as required.
  • Conduct hourly property rounds and monitor security cameras to ensure safety and compliance with community rules.
  • Respond to emergency situations (e.g., fire alarms, disturbances), contacting first responders and Property Manager as needed.
  • Answer incoming calls, relay messages, and assist with front office communication as directed.
  • Complete required documentation such as logbook entries, incident reports, and inspection checklists.
  • Promote a clean, safe, and supportive environment through regular inspections and by reporting maintenance or safety concerns.
  • Enforce property rules fairly and escalate violations to Property Management.
  • Peer Support Responsibilities:
  • Use lived experience to build rapport with residents and provide emotional support, encouragement, and connection to resources.
  • Support residents in setting personal goals, navigating housing and support services, and advocating for their needs.
  • Identify and engage residents who may benefit from additional support or early intervention.
  • Model appropriate behavior, coping strategies, and self-care.
  • Co-facilitate peer support groups or activities when requested.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings and case staffing to share insights that support resident success.
  • De-escalate conflicts using trauma-informed practices and escalate to appropriate staff when necessary.
  • Document all peer encounters in SCC’s systems in compliance with Medicaid billing standards.
  • Maintain professional boundaries while acting as a role model of recovery and empowerment.
Requirements:

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Understanding and commitment to SCC’s mission and the Permanent Supportive Housing model.
  • Strong communication skills; ability to interact respectfully and effectively with diverse populations.
  • Skilled in conflict resolution, de-escalation, and crisis prevention.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
  • Comfortable working independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage time and maintain composure in fast-paced settings.
  • Empathy and understanding for residents with a history of incarceration, homelessness, substance use, or mental health challenges.
  • Ability to document services accurately in compliance with Medicaid billing requirements.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Lived experience with incarceration, homelessness, mental health, or recovery required.
  • COPA-recognized Peer Support Specialist Certification required, or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire (training supported by SCC).
  • Experience providing Medicaid-billable peer support services preferred.
  • Experience in front desk, security, or customer service roles a plus.
  • Proficient in English (oral and written); bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply.
  • Basic computer skills, including use of Microsoft Word and office equipment.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to sit, stand, walk, climb stairs, use hands and fingers, and lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations.
  • Reasonable accommodation may be made for individuals with disabilities.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • Full-time, 40 hours per week. Monday – Friday, Hours 2:00pm -10:00 pm with opportunity for additional coverage as needed. In-person position at the Residence on Acoma/ Providence at the Heights sites.

Compensation

  • Hourly Rate: $20.00 – $25.00/hour (depending on experience and certification).
  • Benefits: Full-time employees are eligible for SCC’s competitive benefits package, including health, dental, vision, life insurance, generous paid time off, and a 401(k) with employer match.
