Job Description

I. General Description of Duties A. Perform those activities necessary to maintain optimum standards of student health. B. Implement the policies of the Mentor Exempted Village Board of Education relating to the school health services programs as they are interpreted by the Superintendent of Schools. C. Fulfill the responsibility of the profession, to the school system, and to the community by personal involvement in activities designed to improve both the student's health environment and their curriculum. D. Act as a proper role model for staff and students at all times. E. Perform duties in a professional manner and in accordance with Mentor Exempted Village Board of Education policies and guidelines. F. Perform other duties as assigned by the building principal or the Coordinator of Related Student Services which reasonably relate to the scope of the general job description.

II. Essential Functions of Position A. Determine the immediate and probable health needs of students in the school(s) served. B. Care for emergency sickness and/or injury to include home calls, 911 calls, and/or other appropriate referral, and arrange transportation for sick or injured students. C. Conduct health appraisals of all designated students through periodic individual screening procedures. D. Provide advice to parents when sought regarding the utilization of private physicians, dentists, and clinics for obtaining health care. E. Assist the Public Health Department in the program of communicable disease control. F. Confer with physicians, administrators, teachers, and parents concerning student health needs and procedures for obtaining health care. G. Participate in the formulation of policies, standards, guidelines, and objectives of the school health services program and assist the school(s) assigned, as well as the District, in the development of a desirable program of health services. H. Maintain and interpret student health records and provide such information to principals and teachers as may be necessary to aid in structuring an optimum educational process. I. Strive to increase the efficient use of District resources in the daily operations of the school clinic. J. Promote professional growth through workshops, individual consultation and group meetings, attendance at conferences, and use of consultants and programs. K. Assist in the coordination of the school program with the total health program of the community and encourage community agencies to improve health facilities. L. Consult and cooperate with other school personnel concerning educational, financial, and civic matters as they may relate to the school health services M. Conduct studies and initiate research in the area of school health as necessary. N. Investigate by means of home calls, at the principal or Coordinator of Related Student Services request, attendance irregularities which may be related to illness, unusual environment, or poor health standards, and process appropriate referrals through the building administration and the Office of the Coordinator of Related Student Services. O. Ensure that the school clinic(s) where assigned comply with State statutes, regulations of the Ohio Department of Education, and policies adopted by the Mentor Exempted Village Board of Education. P. Work cooperatively with parents and community groups concerned with student health services Q. Supervise the consumption of medication when written permission is received from both the parent and physician in accordance with Mentor Exempted Village Board of Education policies, guidelines, and applicable Rules and Regulations. R. Provide training to other building staff, as determined by the principal, the procedures for administering student medications. S. Establish and maintain effective channels of communication. T. Strive toward the highest standards of personal conduct. U. Provide services to students who have Individual Educational Plans (IEP) as required.

III. Required Skills, Knowledge, and Qualities to Perform Essential Functions A. Possess a Bachelor's Degree with a school nurse license or be eligible for a valid school nurse license as required by the State of Ohio. B. Experience in the health care field as will be likely to ensure success as a school nurse. C. Ability to work with audiometer and vision screening materials and to interpret the results of such screening. D. Ability to conduct appropriate screening and referral procedures regarding scoliosis. E. Ability to work with administrators, staff, students, and parents in a positive and cordial manner, i.e. – strong interpersonal skills. F. Possess and maintain first aid skills. G. Knowledge of current educational trends, including technology. H. Ability to convert ideas into practice. I. Understanding of the learning process and the maturation of the adolescent child. J. Ability to communicate to professional and community groups the purpose, content, and procedures of the school health program, rules and regulations. K. Ability to see district-wide educational objectives in relation to the changing community, state, national and world scenes. L. Freedom of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the Mentor Exempted Village School District.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk, and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, and reach and lift with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. 3. The position requires the individual to be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints, to prioritize which needs are to be fulfilled first, interact with the public, students, and other staff, meet demands from several people, and the ability to work alone.
