About the Role
SafetyCall International is looking for an experienced HR leader to serve as our Director of Human Resources. In this role, you'll own the full spectrum of HR from strategic planning and budgeting to employee relations and payroll to recruiting, benefits, and compliance while leading a team of 4 HR professionals supporting approximately 350 employees, the majority of which work remotely, across 26 states. You'll drive the HR Strategic Plan, shaping and executing initiatives that align with company-wide goals, while serving as a trusted advisor to senior leadership. This role is very hands on with the day-to-day HR functions with direct involvement in all functions from employee relations to recruiting.
Work Arrangement
Location/Schedule: Fully remote for candidates more than 40 miles from Bloomington, MN. Travel to the main office is expected 4-6 times annually. Hybrid for candidates within 40 miles of Bloomington, MN — Average 2 days in office, 3 days remote but can vary depending on week.
What You'll Do
- Lead, develop, and support a team of 4 HR professionals, fostering a collaborative and high-performing HR function
- Serve as the HR leader for a workforce of ~350 employees spanning 26 states, ensuring consistent and compliant practices across all locations
- Lead all employee relations, investigations, and performance management, advising HR team, supervisors and senior leadership on complex situations including PIPs, disciplinary actions, and terminations
- Manage FMLA, ADA, and Workers' Comp cases and ensure company-wide compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws
- Review, revise and implement changes to compensation programs, performance evaluation processes and other HR projects.
- Own the HR Strategic Plan — defining initiatives, aligning to company goals, and managing the HR budget
- Develop and oversee the HR payroll and budget, tracking spending and reporting status regularly to the VP of Administration
- Define and track key employee metrics — including FTE counts, turnover, and other workforce trends — to inform strategic decisions and report to senior leadership
- Oversee full-cycle recruiting and participate in recruiting process by conducting interviews and other tasks as needed
- Oversee the administration of employee benefits programs — enrollments, COBRA, open enrollment planning, invoice approvals, and broker relations.
- Oversee the processing of biweekly payroll, ensuring accuracy and compliance across all states
- Champion employee morale and engagement, working proactively with the HR team, Directors and managers on culture and team health
- Develop and deliver management training
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources or related field and at least 8 years of HR experience, including 5+ years at a management level. Director level experience preferred.
- SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP certification highly preferred.
- Our ideal candidate has experience working hands on in multiple areas of HR, has thrived in a small to medium size company, worked in the healthcare or veterinary industry and has experience supporting a remote workforce and contact center operations.
- Strong working knowledge of employment law (MN PSSL, FMLA, ADA, FLSA, and more), multistate preferred.
- Deep knowledge of employee relations best practices, including investigations, disciplinary processes, performance management and policy interpretation with the ability to balance employee advocacy and business needs.
- Exceptional interpersonal, communication, and conflict resolution skills.
- Proven ability to lead, coach, and develop HR teams and advise leaders at all levels.
- High degree of discretion and ability to handle confidential matters with professionalism.
- Experience supporting a remote workforce preferred.
- Experience working with multi-state payroll preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook) and HRIS/payroll software. ADP experience a plus.
- Ability to adapt quickly, prioritize competing demands, and stay solution-focused under pressure.
