Qualifications .
a. Registration with ARDMS in Abdomen/Small Parts and at least two additional certifications (e.g., RVT, OB/GYN, Musculoskeletal, etc.)
b. Current BCLS certification and demonstrated expertise in ultrasounds of the scrotum, pelvis, and U/S-guided biopsies (including liver and renal biopsies of native and transplanted organs), renal artery stenosis, and renal Doppler
c. Minimum 3 years of hospital experience within the United States
d. Must have worked in a hospital setting as an Ultrasound Tech within the last six months
e. Evidence of current professional liability insurance
f. Availability to work for the VA for at least six (6) months after the start date
g. Must have worked in a hospital lab setting as a Vascular Ultrasound Tech within the last six months
The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as long periods of standing, bending, reaching for supplies or materials, lifting moderately heavy items, 50-100 pounds (or occasionally lifting heavier items) and carrying moderately heavy items (15-44 pounds). The work may require specific physical characteristics and abilities such as dexterity (to perform intricate collection or analysis procedures), mental and emotional stability and color vision. Job duties and responsibilities:
Physical Demands:
• The incumbent must be able to perform all activities of the position without restriction.
• Moderate physical effort (lift/carry up to 50-100lbs.)
• Prolonged extensive, or considerable standing/walking
• Lifts, positions push, and/or transfer patients/supplies/equipment
• Assists with lifting and moving patients
• Pushes/pulls or moves/lifts heavy equipment/supplies
• Manual dexterity and mobility
• Intermittent exertion when performing exams
• Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching
VA HOURS OF OPERATION/SCHEDULING:
Personnel will work any eight (8) hour shift, nine (9) hour shift, or ten (10) hour shift. Eight (8) hour shifts are typically five (5) days per week with 30 minutes for lunch/dinner. Nine (9) hour shifts are typically a rotating four (4) day and five (5) days per week with 30 minutes for lunch/dinner. Ten (10) hour shifts are typically a four (4) day week. Rotating weekends and Holiday shifts may be required, and hours will vary. Overtime, On-Call, and Call Back duty for these positions may be required on occasion and in emergent situations. Overtime, On-Call, and Call Back rates will be in accordance with Contractor's Federal Supply Schedule Price List terms and conditions. Minimum assignments shall be for 2 days (16 hours per position), with possible opportunities for longer assignments depending on the need of the Government.

Job duties and responsibilities:
- Performs standard and complex ultrasound examinations, including examinations of the abdomen, liver, renal, GYN and small parts scanning.
- Performs computer work and required forms associated with patient exams, complications and/or quality improvement activities. Responsible for the quality assurance of the image (positioning/label/technique/network information) prior to transmission to the Client's (Picture archiving communication system) network.
- Schedules exams in a manner to optimize scanner times while maintaining flexibility for emergency cases. This requires the ability to prioritize scheduled patients as well as the ability to accommodate the emergency patient.
- Confers with radiologists to determine requirement of nonstandard exams. Schedules patients for examinations, advises radiologists or referring physicians of examination results and notifies the radiologist of scans requiring immediate attention.
- Practices radiation safety in order to reduce exposure to patients, staff and self. This is achieved by the use of lead aprons, lead gloves, proper exposure factor and equipment, lead shields, lead lined walls and collimation. Must assure compliance to radiation regulations to wear film badges and be aware of and practice the safety policies and procedures of the medical center and participate in quality assurance activities as directed.
- Maintains records and files of exams performed on patients. This includes the maintenance of patient logbooks, registration and editing of patient exams in the computerized information system, copying of images (to CD or film), logging patients on the Hospital information system - Radiology information system (HIS-RIS) (switching to Cerner soon) work list.
- Properly identifies patient images. This is essential so that mistaken identity of patient images does not occur. The technician must be certain that the patient I.D. band and the request are identical.
- Responsible to explain exams to competent patients so that patients understand what is to be done as well as what hazards, if any, are possible.
- Performs irregular hour emergency scans on standby/on call, 24 hours per day, coverage.
- Works independently and reports any unusual problems or conflicts to the Imaging Chief Technologist.
