This position offers the opportunity to work on electric distribution design and engineering projects supporting utility clients across multiple states. The Distribution Designer will be responsible for designing overhead and underground electric distribution systems, conducting field staking, preparing construction packages, developing project cost estimates, and coordinating with property owners, utility personnel, and construction teams. The successful candidate will ensure all designs comply with utility standards, National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) requirements, and applicable engineering practices. This role combines office-based engineering with fieldwork and is ideal for individuals who enjoy working on utility infrastructure projects while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to improve the reliability and safety of electric distribution systems. Key Responsibilities Distribution System Design Design overhead and underground electric distribution systems ranging from 4kV through 35kV. Prepare detailed construction drawings, staking sheets, work orders, and engineering packages. Perform field investigations and staking for new construction, upgrades, relocations, and system improvements. Develop engineering designs in accordance with utility construction standards and specifications. Prepare material lists, Bills of Materials (BOMs), and construction estimates. Design distribution framing, conductor layouts, structure loading, guying, and pole assemblies. Perform conductor sag interpretation, geometric angle calculations, and line design calculations. Ensure constructability, reliability, maintainability, and safety are incorporated into every design. Field Engineering Conduct field visits to gather engineering data and evaluate existing distribution infrastructure. Perform distribution staking activities across various terrain and environmental conditions. Collect field measurements and document existing utility facilities. Coordinate with landowners regarding project scope, easements, and right-of-entry requirements. Support route selection and facility placement based on field conditions. Assist with permitting activities involving local, county, state, and federal agencies. Travel to project sites as required, including occasional overnight travel. Project Coordination Coordinate with Project Managers, Planning, Operations, Construction, Transmission, Data Maintenance, and Distribution Operations teams. Participate in project scoping and engineering review meetings. Resolve engineering issues affecting cost, schedule, constructability, and customer satisfaction. Monitor project schedules and maintain accurate project documentation. Ensure compliance with client engineering standards and quality requirements. Technical Responsibilities Prepare detailed engineering calculations for: Structure Loading Pole Guying Conductor Sag Geometric Angles Framing Design Material Assemblies Develop construction packages for utility crews and contractors. Assist with permit applications and regulatory documentation. Review engineering work for accuracy and compliance. Leadership & Mentoring Mentor junior designers and engineering staff. Share technical knowledge and best practices with project teams. Promote continuous improvement in engineering quality and design standards. Maintain awareness of evolving utility technologies and engineering methodologies. Required Qualifications High School Diploma or GED required. Valid Texas Driver's License with an insurable driving record. Ability to successfully pass a background check and drug screening. Strong organizational and time management skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong analytical and technical problem-solving abilities. Ability to work independently and collaboratively. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Willingness to perform fieldwork in varying weather and terrain conditions. Ability to lift and carry field equipment including hammers, stakes, lath, and related tools. Willingness to travel, including occasional overnight stays. Preferred Qualifications Associate Degree or Certificate in Electric Power Technology. Minimum 1 year of Electric Power Technology experience or Minimum 3 years of electric distribution design and estimation experience. Experience with utility distribution engineering. Experience working for electric utilities or utility consulting firms. Experience mentoring junior staff.
