DIRECTOR, PROGRAMMING

Includes Nights & Weekends Classification: Exempt, Regular, Fulltime, Hybrid (60% Onsite) Location: Mountain View, CA Department: Programming Position Summary The Director of Programming leads CHM’s live programming and community engagement portfolio, including CHM Live and other signature events and conversations that explore technology, innovation, history, and the evolving impact of computing on society. Reporting to the Chief Marketing & Experience Officer, this role advances CHM’s audience engagement and public impact goals through dynamic, mission‑aligned programming that positions the Museum as a leading voice at the intersection of technology and humanity. The Director identifies emerging topics and influential voices, cultivates high‑profile speakers and strategic partnerships, and oversees programs from concept development through production, audience engagement, and evaluation. Responsibilities Leadership & Operational Oversight Manage program planning processes, workflows, and operational coordination across departments to ensure timely and successful program delivery. Develop and manage program budgets, contracts, speaker agreements, and related administrative processes. Oversee external vendors, production partners, freelancers, and contractors supporting program execution. Support staffing, scheduling, and resource planning related to live programming initiatives and audience engagement activities. Contribute to departmental planning, goal setting, and strategic initiatives in alignment with CHM’s institutional priorities. Programming Strategy & Content Development Lead the development and execution of CHM’s public programming strategy and annual programming calendar. Research and identify timely topics, emerging trends, and influential voices across technology, business, science, media, academia, and society. Develop compelling program concepts and formats that support CHM’s mission, audience engagement goals, and institutional priorities. Collaborate with Development, Internal Events, Curatorial, Marketing, Digital Content and Media teams to shape intellectually engaging and mission‑aligned programs. Track industry developments, major announcements, book releases, anniversaries, and cultural conversations to identify new programming opportunities. Contribute to the ongoing evolution and innovation of CHM’s public programming portfolio and audience experience. Speaker & Partner Management Research, cultivate, and secure high‑profile speakers, authors, technologists, historians, entrepreneurs, executives, policymakers, influencers/newsmakers and industry leaders. Build and steward relationships with speaker representatives, publishers, media organizations, universities, foundations, and strategic partners. Serve as a primary point of contact for assigned speakers and external collaborators throughout the program lifecycle. Represent CHM externally and help strengthen the Museum’s visibility, reputation, and relationships within technology, media, academic, and cultural communities. Collaborate with Development and executive leadership on donor engagement opportunities related to programming initiatives and special events. Research prior institutional engagement, historical relationships, and past programming activity to inform speaker outreach, partnership development, and program strategy. Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date records of speaker, partner, and prospect engagement within Museum CRM and project management systems. Program Management & Production Oversee the planning and execution of in‑person, virtual, and hybrid programs ranging from intimate discussions to large‑scale public events. Manage program timelines, deliverables, budgets, logistics, and communication across multiple concurrent projects. Serve as the “owner” and primary point person for approved programs. Collaborate across the Museum to ensure successful planning, execution, and delivery of public programs. Facilitate ongoing programming meetings with key stakeholders to foster alignment, streamline communication, and support successful event launches. Guide program production processes including event flow, speaker preparation, audience engagement, and post‑event evaluation. Monitor program outcomes, audience feedback, attendance, and engagement metrics to inform future programming strategy and continuous improvement. Relationship Building & External Engagement: Builds and maintains strong relationships with speakers, partners, donors, media, and industry leaders while representing CHM with professionalism and credibility. Collaboration & Influence: Works effectively across departments and builds alignment among diverse stakeholders to successfully develop and execute programs in a highly collaborative environment. Program Leadership & Execution: Manages multiple complex programs simultaneously with strong organization, attention to detail, sound judgment, and the ability to deliver high‑quality experiences on time and within budget. Project Management: Leads the planning and execution of public programs, managing timelines, logistics, and cross‑functional coordination from concept to completion. Partner with internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure seamless execution aligned with CHM’s strategic and audience engagement goals. Qualifications And Skills Background, Experience, Skills and Education Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience in communications, media, journalism, public programs, cultural institutions, business, or a related field. Minimum of 7 years of experience developing, producing, or leading public programs, events, conferences, media initiatives, or audience engagement projects. Demonstrated experience researching, cultivating, and securing high‑profile speakers, strategic partners, or public‑facing collaborations. Demonstrated interest in the intersection of technology, society, culture, public discourse, history, or innovation. Familiarity with contemporary technology trends, Silicon Valley culture, and the history of computing. Excellent communication and relationship‑building skills, with the ability to engage effectively with executives, public figures, partners, donors, media, and cross‑functional teams. Strong project management and organizational skills, including experience managing multiple concurrent projects, timelines, budgets, and event logistics in fast‑paced environments. Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment and discretion, and support evening and weekend programs and events as needed. Preferred Experience in a museum, media organization, cultural institution, nonprofit, university, think tank, or mission‑driven organization. Established professional network within technology, media, academia, publishing, public policy, or related sectors. Experience developing public conversations, speaker series, editorial programming, or live interview formats. Experience working with livestream, virtual, or hybrid event formats. Familiarity with CRM, project management, and event management platforms such as Salesforce, Airtable, Asana, or similar systems. Experience collaborating with fundraising, sponsorship, or donor engagement initiatives.
