Registered Nurse: Float Pool, Family Birth Center

About This Position The Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for providing compassionate quality care that is customer and family focused. The RN assesses, diagnoses, plans, implements, evaluates, and documents care of customers according to hospital and care center policies and standards of professional nursing practices. The RN is accountable for the quality of nursing services delivered. The RN defines, implements, and improves practice standards and environment of care while promoting exceptional customer care. Duties may vary based on the assigned customer care center and may include differences in the required specific clinical skills. Family Birth Center RN – Specific Essential Duties Reviews maternal prenatal history. Collects current signs/symptoms of the newborn, mother, or child. Consults and coordinates with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate customer plan of care. Performs transition, admission, discharge and transfer assessments while considering both physical and psychosocial elements of newborn, child, mother, and family. Recognizes risk factors, changes in status, and interventions appropriate for care. Initiates corrective action when monitoring equipment indicates adverse symptomatology of the newborn, child, or mother. Manages basic life support needs and stabilizes newborn, child, or mother until physician or APRN is available. Records customer’s vital signs, assessments, patient care and interventions as ordered. Works directly with physicians or APRN, assisting them during exams, diagnostic testing, treatments and interventions. Participates and collaborates in multidisciplinary rounds. Prepares and administers (orally, subcutaneously, IM and IV) medications and records prescribed medications. Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments in accordance with policy. Demonstrates phlebotomy skills. Provides IV therapy, bedside care. Operates, maintains and discontinues proper supplies and appropriate medical equipment to care for customers. Reports any suspected abuse to the appropriate agencies. Teaches child, parents, and significant others how to manage care or illness by explaining post‑treatment home care needs, diet/nutrition/exercise programs, self‑administration of medication and rehabilitation, and provides referrals to other healthcare professionals for follow‑up treatment. Displays professionalism while completing multiple urgent tasks in a timely manner. Records all care information concisely, accurately and completely, in Epic. NICU Specific Essential Duties Work collaboratively with ancillary departments that support the NICU. Provide care for Level II babies, including feeding/growing babies, neonatal abstinence, late preterm infants, nasal cannula, IVF and antibiotics, following NRP guidelines, utilizing critical thinking and collaborating with NICU provider team. L&D Specific Essential Duties Utilize critical thinking and collaborate with OB/GYN provider teams. Perform fetal monitoring and interpretation using NICHD/AWHONN nomenclature and guidelines. Provide care to low‑risk inductions/scheduled/unscheduled cesarean sections and to follow‑up recovery care of mother and baby during recovery period. Postpartum Specific Essential Duties Provide care for mother/baby couplet care, including day‑of‑delivery vaginal births, non‑complicated post‑cesarean births, healthy infants. Requirements – Education Associate's degree in nursing; bachelor's degree in nursing preferred. Requirements – Experience Internal Applicants – minimum of one year RN FBC hospital experience required in any combined population of NICU, L&D or PP. External Applicants – minimum of two years RN FBC hospital experience required in any combined population of NICU or L&D. Demonstrated ability to maintain composure in high‑stress situations, act quickly in response to critical situations. Solid PC skills to include MS applications, Internet, etc. Strong communication skills, clearly and concisely in a manner appropriate to the audience. Demonstrated ability to deal with conflict positively; awareness of the needs, feelings and capabilities of others. Ability to be accountable for quality customer service and respond appropriately to a variety of personalities and situations. Ability to maintain quality, safety, and infection control standards. Must be able to read, write and speak effectively in English. Licensure / Certification Current licensure and registration as an RN in the State of MN. Current BLS certification required for all nursing practice areas. Current certification required for the following areas: Emergency Care Center – ACLS, TNCC, PALS; Intensive Care Center & MSCC Lead – ACLS; L&D – NRP, AWHONN's Intermediate Fetal Heart Monitoring Course (one time, new L&D nurses to obtain within 1 year of experience); NICU – NRP, STABLE (one time); PCC/PACU/ENDO – ACLS, PALS.
