Diesel MechanicJOB TITLE: Diesel Mechanic WAGE/HOUR STATUS: NonexemptREPORTS TO: Lead Diesel Mechanic TERMS: 12 MonthsDEPARTMENT: Transportation PAY GRADE: Manual Trades 6The Diesel Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing district-owned diesel and gasoline-powered vehicles, with an emphasis on school buses. This position ensures that all Longview ISD transportation equipment operates safely, efficiently, and in compliance with state and federal regulations. The ideal candidate is experienced, safety-minded, and committed to supporting student transportation needs across the district.High school diploma or GED.Working knowledge of diesel and gasoline engine repair, hydraulics, electrical systems, and vehicle diagnostics.Valid Texas driver's license.Ability to obtain and maintain a Texas Class B CDL with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements within a district-specified timeframe.ASE certifications in diesel engines, brakes, electrical systems, or school bus repair.Texas DPS certified vehicle inspector (or ability to obtain).Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to troubleshoot and solve problems efficiently.Ability to read and interpret maintenance manuals, wiring diagrams, and technical instructions.Effective communication and teamwork skills.Physical ability to lift 50+ pounds, stand for extended periods, work in tight spaces, and perform tasks outdoors as neededMinimum of two years of experience as a diesel mechanic or related Experience working on school buses or large fleet vehiclesPerform routine and preventive maintenance on school buses, trucks, service vehicles, and other district equipment.Diagnose and repair engines, transmissions, electrical systems, fuel systems, cooling systems, brakes, suspensions, and drivetrains.Conduct Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) inspections and ensure all vehicles meet state safety standards.Utilize diagnostic tools and software to identify mechanical and electrical issues.Maintain accurate repair and maintenance records in accordance with district and state requirements.Ensure all repairs follow manufacturer specifications, district policies, and regulatory guidelines.Follow proper safety procedures when using equipment, tools, and chemicals.Assist with road calls and emergency repairs when needed.Report any unsafe conditions, equipment defects, or vehicle issues promptly.Assist with scheduling and prioritizing maintenance tasks.Collaborate with drivers, supervisors, and transportation staff to address vehicle concerns.Maintain an organized, clean work environment and ensure tools and equipment are properly stored.Participate in ongoing training to remain knowledgeable about new technologies and procedures.Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.Standard office equipment including personal computer and peripherals.Frequent sitting and standing; occasional bending/stooping, pushing,/pulling, and twistingRepetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reachingMay work prolonged or irregular hours; work inside and outside (exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather), exposure to noise, fumes, and mechanical equipment; occasional fieldwork for breakdowns or roadside maintenance; Some evening or weekend work may be required during peak periodWork with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress
