Property Accountant – Real Estate

Position Overview

We are seeking a detail-oriented Property Accountant to join our team and support the accounting operations of a real estate portfolio. This individual will be responsible for property-level accounting, monthly financial reporting, account reconciliations, and month-end close activities. The ideal candidate has experience in commercial real estate or property management and a strong understanding of general ledger accounting and financial reporting.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage day-to-day accounting activities for a portfolio of commercial real estate properties.
• Prepare and post journal entries, accruals, prepaids, and other month-end adjustments.
• Perform monthly bank reconciliations, balance sheet reconciliations, and general ledger reviews.
• Prepare monthly financial statements and property-level reporting packages.
• Monitor property income and expenses, investigate variances, and ensure accurate financial reporting.
• Review accounts payable invoices for proper coding, approval, and allocation to the appropriate properties.
• Assist with accounts receivable activities, including tenant billings, rent payments, and outstanding balances.
• Track capital expenditures, fixed assets, and property improvement projects.
• Assist with CAM reconciliations, tenant recoveries, and operating expense allocations, as applicable.
• Support budgeting and forecasting activities by providing property-level financial information.
• Coordinate with property managers, asset managers, and internal accounting teams to resolve discrepancies and address financial questions.
• Assist with annual audits, tax preparation requests, and other financial reporting requirements.
• Maintain accurate accounting records and ensure compliance with GAAP and internal controls.
• Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and streamline reporting procedures.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
• 2–5+ years of accounting experience, preferably within commercial real estate or property management.
• Strong understanding of general ledger accounting, account reconciliations, and month-end close.
• Experience with property-level financial reporting and operating expense management.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software.
• Experience with Yardi, MRI, or similar real estate accounting systems is a plus.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to manage multiple properties, prioritize deadlines, and work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Experience

• Experience with commercial real estate portfolios, including office, retail, industrial, or multifamily properties.
• Familiarity with CAM reconciliations, tenant recoveries, lease-related accounting, and capital expenditures.
• Exposure to budgeting, forecasting, and property-level financial analysis.
• CPA or progress toward CPA certification is a plus.
