Job Title: Phlebotomist - Day Shift (Hospital Laboratory)
Job Description
This role focuses on obtaining and processing blood and nonblood specimens in a busy hospital laboratory. You perform phlebotomy procedures, support critical patient care by responding to codes and rapid calls, and help ensure accurate and timely laboratory testing. Responsibilities

• Obtain blood specimens from patients using venipuncture and other appropriate phlebotomy techniques.
• Collect nonblood specimens such as urine, sputum, and throat swabs for laboratory testing.
• Perform screening tests on collected specimens and report results clearly and accurately.
• Process specimens to prepare them for laboratory testing according to established protocols.
• Prepare and package specimens for dispatch to reference laboratories, ensuring proper labeling, documentation, and handling.
• Handle a high volume of specimen collections, including an average of approximately 50 blood draws per day on the day shift.
• Respond to codes, arterial blood gas (ABG) requests, and rapid response situations as needed to support urgent patient care.
• Work primarily with adult patients, with occasional pediatric patients, including those in specialized units such as a burn unit.
• Follow all hospital and laboratory safety, infection control, and quality standards during specimen collection and processing.
• Maintain accurate records of collections, tests performed, and any issues encountered during procedures.
• Collaborate with nurses, physicians, and laboratory staff to ensure timely and accurate specimen collection and testing.
• Provide professional, respectful, and compassionate interaction with patients during all specimen collection procedures.

Essential Skills

• Proficiency in phlebotomy, including venipuncture and safe blood draw techniques.
• Ability to obtain blood specimens efficiently and accurately in a hospital setting.
• Experience collecting nonblood specimens such as urine, sputum, and throat swabs.
• Phlebotomy certification preferred but not required.
• If not certified, at least 6 months of phlebotomy experience or clinical training with hands-on phlebotomy practice on patients.
• If newly certified, completion of clinical rotations or practical experience in a hospital setting.
• Ability to perform screening tests and accurately report results.
• Capacity to manage a high volume of blood draws, including approximately 50 sticks per day on the day shift.
• Strong attention to detail in labeling, processing, and preparing specimens for testing and reference lab dispatch.
• Comfort working in a busy hospital laboratory environment with mostly adult patients and occasional pediatric patients.
• Ability to respond calmly and efficiently to codes, ABGs, and rapid response situations.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills when working with clinical and laboratory staff.

Work Environment
This position is based in a busy hospital laboratory that supports inpatient and specialized units, including the only burn unit in the area and limited pediatric services. The primary schedule is a day shift from 4:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with other lab shifts such as 12:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for evening coverage. The role involves handling a high volume of daily blood draws, with typical averages of around 50 draws on day shift, 35 on evening shift, and 25-30 in the first four hours of the night shift. The schedule includes rotating weekends, with one consistent weekday off each week to provide a predictable routine. You work closely with clinical teams and may be called to codes, ABGs, and rapid response situations. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Tulsa, OK.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $22.00/hr.
