Victim Services Advocate (Men of Color)

The New York County District Attorney's Office (DANY) has an opening in its Survivor Services Bureau (SSB) for a Victim Services Advocate. The role involves providing comprehensive services to victims, witnesses, and families of crime across the City, with a focus on supporting men of color and other underserved populations. Services include crisis intervention, community referrals, system orientation, case updates, safety planning, liaison work, and developing best‑practice guidance. Responsibilities Direct engagement with men of color victims, witnesses, and families, explaining the criminal justice system, connecting them with services, conducting outreach and follow‑up calls. Maintain ongoing contact with all survivors and families to ensure they receive appropriate support. Provide support services to all crime victims prosecuted by DANY. Explain the criminal justice system and provide case information. Assist with emergency safety planning, orders of protection, depositions, and notification of inmate release. Act as a liaison between victims and the assigned Assistant District Attorney throughout the criminal justice process. Ensure victims, witnesses, and families are connected with concrete and therapeutic services offered by SSB. Provide accompaniment during criminal justice proceedings. Develop best practices and guidance materials for engaging men of color. Participate in community presentations. Perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications High‑school graduation or equivalent and three years of experience in community work or community‑centered activities related to the duties described. Alternate education or experience equivalent to the above. Preferred Qualifications / Skills Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college (required by start date). Demonstrated experience supporting and working with men of color. Experience working with the criminal justice system. Proficiency developing and presenting best practices in the social services sector. Experience with justice‑involved individuals. Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, victim advocacy, or a closely related field, supplemented by 3‑5 years of relevant professional experience (or equivalent education, training, and experience). Thorough knowledge of crime‑victim advocacy, criminal justice procedures, post‑traumatic crisis intervention, and record‑keeping techniques.Experience in program evaluation, needs assessment, and community collaboration. Spanish bilingualism. Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL). Ability to handle and resolve emergency situations, assisting victims in trauma scenarios while maintaining composure. Strong analytical, interpersonal, problem‑solving, oral, and written communication skills. Ability to foster good working relationships within the community and with external agencies. Hours and Shift Shifts may vary: 8:30 am–4:30 pm, 9 am–5 pm, 9:30 am–5:30 pm, 10 am–6 pm, 10:30 am–6:30 pm. Overtime may be required, including nights and weekends.
