Job Summary The MRI Technologist I performs MRI procedures in accordance with departmental protocols and standards. The role involves operating MRI scanners and associated equipment with a high level of proficiency, including scanners, post‑processing stations/programs, IV contrast injectors, O2 and suction equipment, patient transport and patient monitoring equipment. Essential Functions Examines requests and verifies orders for each assigned patient, referring and questioning orders to the Radiologist before performing exams; contacts ordering providers when there are discrepancies. Properly identifies patients (using two identifiers) and assists them while offering brief explanations of procedures; prepares patients with full explanations and documents on appropriate worksheets. Interviews patients for a complete medical history and reviews EMRs to obtain pertinent clinical information. Assumes responsibility for an exam from start to finish, including preparation and administration of IV contrast per departmental protocols. Evaluates technical image quality and consults with a Radiologist if needed; processes additional images or measurements as instructed. Provides basic patient care, informs nursing personnel of changes, initiates life support measures when necessary, and assists in code blue procedures during emergencies. Performs MRI scanning, assists physicians/PA during invasive procedures, and practices sterile technique and infection control policies. Is authorized to obtain medication or contrast material when directed by a licensed practitioner. Practices radiation safety for self, staff, patients, and family; follows all radiation safety standards. Reports equipment malfunctions to superiors and clinical engineering. Maintains knowledge and skills necessary to work safely in an environment with exposure to bloodborne pathogens and infectious disease. Adheres to fire and safety procedures, attends in‑service classes, and completes required safety modules. Operates the radiology computer system for entering orders and charging procedures/supplies; documents contrast administration in the MAR. Maintains a clean, organized work area and keeps supplies stocked. Assists other medical personnel when performing exams or services that involve MRI scans. Maintains knowledge of all MRI safety requirements for staff and patients in and around magnetic fields. Minimum Job Requirements Education, Certification / License, Work Experience Graduate of an institution accredited by an agency that ARRT recognizes in Radiologic or Nuclear Medicine Technology. Active enrollment in an MRI ARRT registry or an ARMRIT program is required; the MRI registry must be obtained within one year of hire. CPR certification is required. Physical Requirements And Working Conditions Requires moderate to heavy physical effort in lifting and moving patients, equipment, and supplies. Involves occasional standing, walking, and sitting during normal operation with frequent stretching, bending, twisting, squatting, or kneeling. May be exposed to various physical conditions such as walking on hard surfaces, climbing stairs, and being near moving equipment. Must use radiation safety guidelines to prevent exposure to ionizing radiation.
