Breastfeeding Peer Counselor

Under general supervision, the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor (BFPC) promotes breastfeeding among WIC participants and the community. The BFPC operates within the BFPC scope of practice as defined in the WIC Breastfeeding Curriculum. The BFPC participates in multidisciplinary teams and may represent WIC on interdisciplinary workgroups. Minimum Qualifications & Education Requirements: Possession of a high school diploma or GED, valid driver's license with reliable transportation, and personal breastfeeding experience are required. Demonstrate a working knowledge of basic human lactation, breastfeeding practices, various positioning techniques, manual expression of breast milk, collection and storage of human milk, good communication skills, computer skill, including proficiency in Microsoft programs. Key Responsibilities: A WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor is a paraprofessional support person who gives basic breastfeeding information and encouragement to pregnant and breastfeeding WIC mothers. BFPC gives a good start to breastfeeding by providing basic breastfeeding information and support to new WIC mothers, informing them about the benefits of breastfeeding, and overcoming barriers. She, also, helps mothers prevent and handle common breastfeeding concerns. BFPC receives a caseload of WIC mothers and makes routine contacts. Counsels pregnant and breastfeeding WIC mothers by telephone or at WIC clinic(s). Limited availability after hours to new WIC mothers who are having breastfeeding difficulties. Keeps accurate confidential records of all contacts made with WIC mothers. Refers WIC mothers according to established protocols to: WIC Nutritionist, BF Coordinator, Lactation Consultant, WIC mother's physician or nurse, public health programs in the community, and social service agencies. BFPC will work with Nutrition Staff to plan and host WIC Prenatal & WIC Breastfeeding Classes and support groups. Attends scheduled staff meetings and breastfeeding conferences, workshops, and trainings as appropriate. Reads assigned books and materials on breastfeeding that are provided by the supervisor. May assist WIC staff in promoting breastfeeding peer counseling through special projects and duties as assigned. #J-18808-Ljbffr Tennessee Department of Health
