Academic Advisor, Center for Student Success

Summary : The Academic Advisor in the Center for Student Success is responsible for providing holistic academic advising and student support to undergraduate students throughout their academic journey at Queens University. This position serves as a central advising resource for students, faculty advisors, and campus partners by helping students navigate academic requirements, institutional policies, available resources, and pathways to success. This is a full-time position and collaborates closely with colleagues across the university to support student persistence, retention, and completion.

This position is exempt from provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is not eligible to earn overtime pay for hours worked above 40 in a single work week. This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include:

• Provides comprehensive academic advising to traditional undergraduate students, supporting academic planning, goal setting, decision-making, and progress towards degree completion.
• Advises students on academic requirements, major and career exploration, institutional policies and procedures, and campus resources, and strategies for academic success.
• Serves as a resource to faculty advisors by answering questions, interpreting academic policies and procedures, and providing guidance on advising best practices and student support resources.
• Develops advising materials and presentations to support individual and group student sessions.
• Supports students through early alert and academic warning processes by monitoring student success plans, particularly for students on academic probation or experiencing academic difficulty.
• Assists in facilitating advisor changes, maintaining advisee caseloads, and following the advising model.
• Provides students, faculty, and campus partners with accurate and current information regarding academic policies, curriculum requirements, course changes, university deadlines, and institutional initiatives.
• Maintains student files and records following advising processes; document all relevant student information and meeting notes using Watermark.
• Participates in the presentation and ongoing development and evaluation of new student and transfer student orientations.
• Contributes to the assessment and continuous improvement of advising services, programs, and student success efforts within the Center for Student Success.
• Appropriately handles, tracks and stores sensitive & confidential materials according to established guidelines by understanding the institution's interpretation of FERPA rules for the release of student information to faculty, parents, students, etc.
• Engages in professional development activities, such as activity in professional organizations, department and university activities and workshops.

Non-Essential Duties include:

• Performs other duties and responsibilities to meet the needs of the University.

Experience, Knowledge and Skills Required :

• Master's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Minimum of one to two years of experience in academic advising in a university setting is preferred.
• Dedicated to supporting student development while effectively prioritizing multiple demands and follow-up with students.
• Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish rapport with a diverse population of students, faculty and staff.
• Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with excellent attention to detail and the ability to quickly learn and communicate new information.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
• Computer proficiency, particularly in MS Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel.
