ANIMAL CONTROL DEPARTMENT

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF JOB The purpose of this position is to perform work related to the overall care of animals within the shelter; ensures the proper feeding and care of all shelter animals, provides for the constant cleanliness of cages, runs, and shelter areas, leads and educates volunteers at the shelter, plans and coordinates the activities of inmates assigned to the shelter, and transports animals to and from events and scheduled appointments. This class works under the direction of the Animal Shelter Director, and reports progress of major activities through periodic updates. ESSENTIAL TASKS The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the position as necessary . Thoroughly cleans and disinfects all areas of the shelter as often as necessary; cleans and sanitizes all cages, runs, and related areas; washes and sterilizes water and food bowls; performs general cleaning, and empties trash. Patrols shelter grounds daily, picking up any waste material. Receives animals to be admitted for shelter care and is responsible for their proper identification and for recording their respective locations. Ensures animals are correctly identified, numbered, and caged according to their records. Releases animals to their owners as directed by customer service or the shelter manager. Performs basic grooming of animals. Determines the type and amount of food animals receive. Feeds each animal as prescribed by the attending D.V.M. or animal care manager and records appetites. Walks dogs several times a day to provide exercise and time for elimination of bowels and bladder. Monitors animal behavior and observes animal appearance and activity for general physical condition, obvious signs of illness, injury, disease, or discontent. Recognizes and records any unusual condition or abnormal behavior of any shelter animal, reports unusual activity to technicians/veterinarians. Takes charge and/or handles animals as required and restrains hard to control animals. Assists doctors, technicians, treatment assistants, or other personnel with the administration of medications or with restraint. May authorize and assist with euthanasia. Plans, coordinates, schedules, and supervises shelter volunteers and inmates assigned to the shelter. Maintains assigned vehicles and equipment used to complete job assignments. Ensures equipment and tools remain in good working condition by performing necessary cleaning and maintenance. Performs minor repairs on equipment as needed and notifies management of any major repairs or new equipment needed to adequately complete assignments. Stores equipment and tools in appropriate storage areas. Must be able to operate the transport van, together with an enclosed trailer. Coordinates transport and intake of animals from outside rescue groups, other shelters, and partner groups. Assists in coordinating activities and functions with other County departments, municipalities, vendors, and outside entities as appropriate. Assists with planning and coordinating of adoption events, transportation of animals, oversees adoption event advertisement, and assists with processing adoption paperwork. Assists law enforcement personnel in situations involving animals as requested. Unpacks, labels and stocks shelter supplies and donations. Assists in fund raising and acquiring donations. Follows shelter procedures. Interprets and enforces all applicable regulatory codes and ordinances governing the care and keeping of domestic animals and livestock as well as the Adoption of Animals. Performs general administrative duties, assists customers, prepares correspondence, and other clerical work as required; prepares and maintains reports, including but not limited to generating, entering, and retrieving computer data, copying and filing documents, and finalizing animals dispositioned, etc. Attends training, meetings, seminars, and/or workshops to enhance job knowledge and skills. ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS Performs other related duties as required. Logging in all animal data. PEOPLE INVOLVEMENT : Requires planning, directing others in the sequence of activities, and reporting on operations and activities to the Director. Requires persuading or influencing others in favor of a service, point of view, or course of action; may enforce laws, rules, and shelter policy. INVOLVEMENT WITH THINGS : Requires handling or using machines tools or equipment requiring moderate instruction or experience, such as computers for data entry, fax machines, copiers, telephones or similar equipment, cameras, animal control equipment, chemical immobilization, etc.; may service office machines, including adding paper and changing toner. COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS REASONING REQUIREMENTS : Requires performing work involving the application of logical principles and thinking to solve practical problems within or applying to a unit or division of the organization. MATHEMATICAL REQUIREMENTS : Requires using addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, and/or calculating ratios, rates and percentages. LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS : Requires reading journals, manuals and professional publications; speaking informally to groups of co-workers, staff in other organizational agencies, the general public, people in other organizations; presenting training; composing original reports, training and other written materials using proper language, punctuation, grammar and style. MENTAL REQUIREMENTS : Requires doing professional-level work requiring the application of principles and practices in a wide range of administrative, technical or managerial methods in the solution of administrative or technical problems; or the coordination of entry-level managerial work; requires general understanding of operating policies and procedures and the ability to apply these to complex administrative problems; requires continuous, close attention for accurate results or frequent exposure to unusual pressures. VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE PREPARATION VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL PREPARATION : Requires high school diploma or GED equivalent, supplemented by education and/or experience in the care and keeping of domestic animals and livestock as well as the adoption of animals. EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS : Requires one (1) year of related work experience. SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES : Must possess a valid state driver's license. Must complete required certified euthanasia technician course. AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT REQUIREMENTS PHYSICAL AND DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS: Requires medium-to-heavy work that involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, climbing, pushing or raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis. Walks and/or stands for long periods of time, frequently works in a bent position. Also requires considerable skill, adeptness and speed in the use of fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving close tolerances or limits of accuracy. May be required to use strength or agility in capturing and restraining stronger, more active animals. ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS : The job may risk exposure to bright/dim light, dust and pollen, extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, animals/wildlife, bites, scratches, animal waste, fumes and/or noxious odors, traffic, heights, disease/pathogens, toxic/caustic chemicals, violence. Possible exposure to contagious diseases. SENSORY REQUIREMENTS : The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing and speaking abilities, color perception, odor perception, depth and texture perception.
