Senior Accountant

Senior AccountantThe Senior Accountant is responsible for performing complex accounting functions, including general ledger maintenance, account reconciliations, financial reporting, and budget monitoring. This position reviews financial transactions for accuracy, assists with year-end closing and annual audits, and provides financial guidance to district departments and schools. The essential duties of the position include without limitation to the following:Maintain and oversee the district's general ledger, ensuring transactions are accurately recorded and properly classifiedPrepare and review journal entries, including recurring, adjusting, accrual, and year-end entriesPrepare and review monthly bank reconciliations for all district bank accounts, investigate discrepancies and outstanding itemsAssist with reconciling Due To/Due From balances to the City's records and investigate and resolve differences in a timely mannerMonitor and maintain the district's chart of accounts in accordance with the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) Uniform Chart of Accounts (UCOA)Ensure financial transactions are properly coded using applicable UCOA account classificationsAssist with reconciling grant expenditures and booking corresponding revenuesAssist with booking of cash receipts through bank accounts and the State of Rhode Island Payment Portal (RIPAY)Support Controller with budget uploads in general ledger systemDevelop and regularly update excel spreadsheets that are used to create valuable reports for the Director of Finance and School CommitteeAssist clerks in the district by answering questions that may arise regarding financial informationAssist in the preparation of schedules for the annual fiscal and compliance auditsSupport the Director of Finance and Controller with annual audit, generate reports to fulfill audit requestsAll other duties assigned by the Executive Director of Finance and the ControllerKnowledge & Skills:Knowledge and understanding of:Fund AccountingTyler ERP Munis Software (preferred)UCOA and UCOA account segments (preferred)Proficiency in Microsoft SuiteProficiency in Google SuiteThorough knowledge of federal and state accounting lawsInterpersonal & Professional Skills:High-level interpersonal skillsAbility to work collaboratively with othersDemonstrated ability to plan, organize, and carry out activities independentlyStrong work ethicExcellent verbal and written communication skillsAbility to analyze and resolve complex problems thoroughly and quicklyRequired Qualifications:Experience:3-5 years of progressive responsibility in a business office or accounting positionPublic sector, school district, or municipal finance experience preferredEducation:Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance requiredMaster's degree preferredCPA preferred
