The Keck School of Medicine (KSOM) of USC and the Department of Pediatrics, together with the Department of Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine (ACCM) at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA), are actively seeking a full-time board-certified physician leader for the position of Department Chair of Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine at CHLA . The academic rank of the successful candidate will be Full Professor of Anesthesiology. CHLA is a leading academic medical center devoted to children, renowned for delivering exceptional care, driving advances in pediatric medicine, and setting national and global standards of care. The CHLA campus and its network provide broad pediatric care, spanning preventive medicine to complex surgical interventions, with CHLA serving as a regional referral center for children from all 50 states and more than 90 countries. The CHLA Care Network unifies more than 250 pediatricians dedicated to quality care delivery across community and hospital settings. With more than 350 specialty programs and services, CHLA has nearly 7,500 team members and 1,000 medical staff. Discovery and Innovation CHLA clinicians and researchers contribute to pediatric medicine through the Saban Research Institute, among the top 10 children’s hospitals for National Institutes of Health funding. It is the largest provider of Medi‑Cal complex care in California and acts as a safety net for medically complex children in Los Angeles County. Department of Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine (ACCM) ACCM is one of five academic and clinical departments at CHLA, overseeing pediatric care, research and training. It has a broad and holistic approach combining anesthesiology, critical care, pain medicine and palliative care, with a department of 410 team members and rotating trainees. 79 Board‑certified or Board‑eligible Faculty 38 Fellows 65 Rotating Pediatric Residents 79 Rotating Anesthesiology Residents 61 Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists 25 Advanced Practice Providers 7 Psychosocial Practitioners ACCM’s care extends beyond the operating room to pain management, remote anesthesiology, imaging, consultations and pediatric ICU services, including cardiac and general surgical ICUs. Annual clinical activity includes thousands of anesthesia cases, ICU admissions and pain/palliative encounters. The department supports the Laura P. and Leland K. Whittier Virtual Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and hosts a Center for Pediatric Bioethics. Clinical Divisions within ACCM include Critical Care Medicine (Cardiothoracic ICU and Pediatric ICU), Clinical Anesthesiology, Pain Medicine and Palliative Care. Position Description We are seeking an experienced and dynamic leader to join as Chair of ACCM. The Chair will oversee faculty activities and medical care across critical environments, support the academic success and professional development of faculty, fellows and team members, and drive departmental growth. Candidate Attributes The ideal candidate is a pediatric anesthesiologist board-certified in critical care medicine with strong operations experience, an accomplished clinical research record and a track record of mentoring faculty. The candidate should demonstrate vision, academic credentials, effective people leadership, strategic thinking and clear communication. Ability to build high‑performing teams and engage in strategic decision‑making is required. Responsibilities Provide leadership and strategic direction at the Enterprise, Department and Hospital level, working with division chiefs and department vice chairs. Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to deliver high‑quality clinical services to patients and families. Foster a positive work environment. Provide guidance and mentorship for physicians and trainees to support professionalism and effective communication. Build partnerships with other division leaders to collaborate on clinical activities. Demonstrate expertise in anesthesiology and critical care, and understand forces shaping healthcare in the US. Identify opportunities for growth of clinical, research and educational programs. Support growth plans, monitor progress and performance toward objectives. Participate in departmental and division fundraising activities and ensure compliance with billing and documentation rules. Oversee division budget and participate in annual budgeting with department leadership and hospital groups. Operationalize financial strategic plan goals and priorities. Coordinate educational activities for anesthesiology and foster cooperative research programs. Lead quality assurance and performance improvement activities in partnership with QA/QI teams. Deliver academic and performance evaluations for division faculty on schedule. Lead recruitment for division chief positions and support faculty appointments and promotions. Assist with recruitment of key faculty for other departments and units as appropriate. Ensure clinical care meets quality and productivity standards. Partner with enterprise leadership to maximize CHLA’s clinical care impact. Requirements Board certification in Anesthesiology and Pediatric Anesthesiology. Primary board certification in Anesthesiology; training in Critical Care Medicine and Pediatrics is a plus. Experience Minimum of 5 years of division leadership experience, preferably at a large, complex academic children\'s hospital or academic medical center in a diverse, urban, highly regulated environment with a high Medicaid population. Experience in cost management and budgeting is preferred. Demonstrated commitment to professional development, mentoring and coaching of faculty and staff. Licensure Must be licensed (or eligible for licensure) in California. Compensation Considerations CHLA/KSOM offers a competitive compensation package with a salary range of $650,000 to $775,000 and a robust benefits program. Final pay is determined based on education and experience.
