School-Based Counseling • Telehealth • Behavior Support Services

Position Overview

Supportive Community Innovations is seeking a licensed or associate-licensed mental health clinician who thrives working as a true generalist across ages, diagnoses, and service settings. This position combines school-based counseling for school-aged children with opportunities to provide telehealth or limited office-based counseling to adolescents and adults and Behavior Support Services to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, most of whom are adults.

The school-based portion of the role is generally scheduled one to two days per week at a partner school located approximately 30–45 minutes from Bloomington. Clinicians seeking a larger or year-round schedule should be interested in building a blended caseload rather than relying exclusively on school-based work. The strongest fit will be someone who values variety, works independently, and can organize multiple service types, schedules, documentation requirements, and community relationships with consistent follow-through.

How the Role May Be Structured

The exact service mix will depend on the clinician’s availability, qualifications, interests, caseload needs, and desired number of hours. A typical schedule may include:

One to two days per week providing counseling to elementary-aged students at a partner school.

Telehealth counseling with adolescents, adults, families, or other appropriate clients.

Limited office-based counseling during available office hours and space.

Behavior Support Services for adults and some younger individuals with developmental disabilities, receiving Indiana Medicaid Waiver services.

Part-time applicants may focus primarily on the school-based work. Clinicians seeking full-time or more consistent year-round hours should expect to develop and maintain a broader caseload across counseling and Behavior Support Services.

Counseling Responsibilities

Provide individual counseling across the lifespan, including developmentally appropriate and play-based therapy for children when clinically indicated.

Complete biopsychosocial assessments, treatment plans, progress notes, and other required clinical documentation accurately and on time.

Adapt clinical approach to varied presenting concerns, developmental levels, communication styles, family systems, and functional abilities.

Coordinate with parents or guardians, school personnel, healthcare providers, and other involved professionals as appropriate and with proper authorization.

Maintain confidentiality and follow HIPAA, professional ethics, payer, and organizational requirements across in-person and telehealth settings.

Behavior Support Services Responsibilities

Behavior Support Services are provided primarily to adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities who receive Indiana Medicaid Waiver services. Depending on the caseload, responsibilities may include:

Conduct behavioral assessments and identify the environmental, communication, emotional, developmental, and skill-based factors affecting behavior.

Develop practical, person-centered behavior support plans that can be implemented in homes, day programs, workplaces, and community settings.

Train caregivers, direct support professionals, family members, and interdisciplinary team members on plan implementation.

Review data, monitor progress and treatment fidelity, revise interventions, and coordinate with case managers and other providers.

Respond thoughtfully to complex situations involving mental health needs, disability, trauma history, limited communication, environmental barriers, and competing team perspectives.

Training and clinical support are available for clinicians who have strong general clinical skills but are newer to formal Behavior Support Services.

School-Based Work Environment

School-based counseling is provided in a dedicated classroom on the school campus. The space is functional but is not designed as a traditional private-practice office. The clinician should be comfortable creating a welcoming therapeutic environment within the available space, traveling consistently to the school, and collaborating effectively with school staff while maintaining appropriate clinical boundaries and confidentiality.

Qualifications

Master’s or doctoral degree in counseling, psychology, social work, marriage and family therapy, or a closely related clinical field.

Current Indiana license or associate license appropriate to the discipline, such as LMHC, LMHCA, LCSW, LSW, LMFT, LMFTA, or HSPP.

Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and current automobile insurance.

Willingness and ability to travel to the partner school and to community-based Behavior Support appointments as assigned.

Willingness to work with children, adolescents, adults, families, and individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities.

Computer proficiency, including electronic health records, email, telehealth platforms, and shared scheduling systems.

Preferred Experience and Attributes

Broad clinical interest and comfort serving clients across the lifespan rather than focusing on only one age group or presenting concern.

Experience with children and interest in play therapy or another developmentally appropriate child-focused modality.

Experience with adults, disability services, community mental health, case consultation, or behavior support.

Knowledge of development, family systems, trauma-informed care, neurodevelopmental differences, and the interaction between mental health and behavior.

Strong clinical writing, time-management, and caseload-management skills.

High degree of initiative, reliability, professional judgment, flexibility, and follow-through.

Ability to work independently while remaining responsive to supervision, collaboration, and organizational expectations.

Comfort building and maintaining a caseload across multiple service types and settings, including through seasonal changes in school-based availability.

Weekly clinical supervision for associate-licensed clinicians, as applicable.
