Job Description
Butterfly Grove School is a premier independent school dedicated exclusively to the education and
empowerment of students on the autism spectrum. The Speech-Language Pathologist provides
direct speech, language, and communication services to students with identified needs, working
pursuant to goals and treatment priorities established by the Director.
The SLP serves as an integral member of the multidisciplinary team, supporting students through
direct therapy, classroom collaboration, and family consultation. Services may be delivered
individually, in small groups, or through push-in support within the classroom, with a focus on
building functional communication skills that generalize across the school day.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Specific duties include:
- Direct Student Services & Intervention
• Deliver individual or small group therapy sessions to students, either by pulling them out of
the classroom for focused work or pushing in to provide support within the classroom
context
• Connect therapy goals to classroom curriculum and daily activities, working with the
teaching team to support generalization of communication skills across the school da
• Collaborate on lessons with classroom staff, modeling language strategies that benefit all
students in the class
• Facilitate social skills groups focused on pragmatic language, helping students navigate
social interactions, understand nonverbal cues, and resolve conflicts
• Identify student communication needs and collaborate with other professional staff
• Plan and co-facilitate morning meetings in the classroom(s)
- Collaboration & Consultation
• Regularly meet with the Director and classroom teachers to discuss student progress, share
strategies, and align goals between therapy and the classroom
• Support parent communication in coordination with the Director, as requested
• Actively participate in team meetings, contributing expertise on speech and language
development and functional communication
• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with colleagues, families, and
community partners using tact, patience, and courtesy
- Assessment, Documentation & Planning
• Perform speech and language screenings for all students as requested by the Director
• Administer formal and informal assessments to evaluate speech, language, voice, and
fluency, following guidelines from the California Speech-Language Pathology & Audiology
Board, as requested by the Director
• Prepare comprehensive evaluation reports that clearly explain assessment results,
diagnostic impressions, and recommendations for school and home
• Monitor student communication goals
• Maintain confidential, accurate, and up-to-date records of all therapy sessions,
consultations, and communications; provide records to the Director upon request
• Prepare and maintain accurate filing systems
- Program Support & Staff Development
• Contribute to shared learning conversations with the teaching team on communication
strategies and student language needs, and serve as an available resource on
communication-related observations and insights as part of ongoing team collaboration
• Cooperate in school-wide supervision of students during out-of-classroom activities
• Perform related duties as assigned
- Professionalism & Compliance
• Adhere to the Code of Ethics established by the American Speech-Language-Hearing
Association (ASHA)
• Ensure licensure with the California Speech-Language Pathology & Audiology Board
remains current and in good standing
• Serve as a strong advocate for students with communication needs, promoting an inclusive
and language-accessible learning environment
• Engage in ongoing professional development to stay current on best practices and
evidence-based interventions in school-based speech and language therapy
• Work independently under general supervision, applying sound judgment in interpreting and
implementing individualized student plans
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
This role requires the physical ability to perform the essential functions of the position. Reasonable
accommodations will be made for individuals with disabilities. Regular requirements include talking
and hearing. The employee frequently uses hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or
controls and reaches with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk,
sit, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or
move up to 25 lbs. The role also involves frequent computer use and travel to attend meetings.
Visual requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth
perception.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed in a classroom environment, as well as shared outdoor and common areas. The
role involves working directly with children, and the employee must be prepared to respond to
accidents and emergencies as needed. The employee occasionally works in outside weather
conditions. The role may involve close physical contact with students and situations that require a
calm, grounded response to student dysregulation. The noise level in the work environment is
usually moderate. Reasonable accommodations will be made for individuals with disabilities to
perform the essential functions of this role.
SCHEDULE:
• Monday to Friday
• Approximately 204 days, aligned to the annual BGS school calendar
• Occasional off-hour work is required

Skills and Requirements
Education/Experience:
• Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology or a related field required
• Hold and maintain a valid California Clinical Rehabilitative Services Credential or
Speech-Language Pathology Services Credential authorizing services as a
Speech-Language Pathologist, or possess qualifications for alternative certification as
required by the California Education Code
• Hold and maintain licensure with the California Speech-Language Pathology & Audiology
Board, ensuring it remains current and in good standing
• Prior experience in a Non-Public or Independent School serving neurodiverse students,
preferred
• Deep, nuanced understanding of the autism spectrum, including communication differences,
sensory processing, and behavioral support
• Knowledge of speech and language needs across a range of disability profiles
• Knowledge of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems
• Knowledge of integrated practices in a school setting
Minimum Requirements:
• Legal authorization to work in the U.S.
• Ability to pass a Department of Justice (DOJ) fingerprint clearance
• Within 60 days of hire, provision of TB (tuberculin) clearance, as mandated by the California
