Job no: 498767 Work type: Staff Full-time Department: Administrative Services Location: Wilf Campus, 500 West 185th Street, NY, NY Categories: Safety/Security Position Summary The Chief of Security (COSEC), reporting to the Chief Facilities Officer, leads all elements of the Security Department for all campuses at an executive level, protecting the lives, assets, and property of the University and its employees, students, and visitors. Responsibilities include training, loss prevention, auditing, corrective action, investigations/interrogations, security strategy and initiatives, mandated Cleary reporting, and security grants management. Position Responsibilities Establish standards, operating procedures, staffing protocols, security posts, and physical security of all buildings on all campuses, including on- and off‑campus events and official University travel when applicable. Develop, manage, and track the security budget. Manage training and drills for security staff, University employees, staff, and students. Lead security awareness programs and training initiatives to educate employees about best practices and potential threats. Stay updated with security trends, technologies, and regulatory changes to ensure continuous improvement. Conduct regular security audits and risk assessments to identify vulnerabilities and ensure compliance. Manage the campus emergency alert system. Work closely with and supervise outsourced/contracted security firms in selecting, training, and supervising all guards. Supervise maintenance of physical security, CCTV, radio systems, and other security systems. Investigate reports of stolen property and criminal activity, including interviews, root cause analyses, and corrective actions. Coordinate with local NYPD precincts and other law enforcement agencies, including FBI and Homeland Security. Maintain professional relationships and protocols to support the University’s needs. Develop and conduct University community education programs. Analyze reporting procedures and security statistics to improve operations. Coordinate with the Office of General Counsel on federal Cleary reporting. Liaise with security organizations such as ADL and the Secure Community Network. Analyze security procedures against professional benchmarks and comparable institutions. Coordinate with the Facilities Department’s locksmith operation. Experience & Educational Background Bachelor's degree in security management, criminal justice, business administration, cybersecurity, or a related field and at least 15 years of related experience is required. Prior law enforcement experience preferred, especially in a large city such as New York City. Strong communication skills and ability to foster open expression and cooperation. Commitment to safety, security, and satisfaction of all University constituents. Consistent alignment with the University’s strategic objectives and standards.
