Funeral Director/Embalmer

Job Overview Compassionately facilitate funeral arrangement discussions with deceased next of kin and preside over visitation, funeral, and graveside services in accordance with family wishes, company expectations, and local, state, or federal laws. May perform embalming responsibilities. As the licensed Funeral Director, oversee compliance with all mortuary, health, and vital statistics regulations within the funeral establishment(s). Responsibilities Receive or initiate calls to deceased next of kin, exhibit concern and empathy, obtain or confirm deceased and family contact information, briefly discuss needs (including languages), schedule arrangement appointments, and send appointment confirmations. Perform removals or transfers in accordance with company standards and processes; care for deceased respectfully and update removal status in proprietary software. Greet next of kin and escort them to the meeting space; initiate and facilitate arrangement conferences, assess needs, and summarize desired outcomes. Discuss available life insurance and benefits (e.g., Veteran). Promote funeral, cemetery, and crematory services and merchandise such as catering, flowers, music, and Ever Lasting Memory products. Transition arrangement conferences to the Funeral Services Counselor/Advisor to present cemetery property and merchandise options, pricing, and contract completion. Review and authorize merchandise and service contract revisions. Confirm authorization to proceed with service arrangements. Preside as Master of Ceremonies for visitation, funeral, or graveside services in a professional, organized, and caring manner. Attend graveside services, ensure the casket is placed correctly, remove personal belongings, inspect deceased, adjust casket dressing, and communicate concerns to preparation staff. Inspect services arrangements against contractual arrangements and next of kin expectations; initiate corrective action and provide instruction or guidance to services team members. Interact with family to fulfill death‑care requests and obtain leads for pre‑need services. Execute event planning responsibilities, including resource planning and ordering of music, flowers, or catering to fulfill arrangement requests. Produce memorial products such as scanning photos, ordering memorabilia, creating electronic presentations, writing obituaries, and creating online memorials; prepare the event room and clean after the event. Perform attendant duties such as parking lot attendant, driver, usher, pallbearer, or courier; attend community or charity events to represent and promote the location. Complete embalming duties: verify identification, review authorization, clean and embalme the body, perform restoration and styling, dress the body, verify casket and lining per contract, maintain preparation room, dispose of hazardous waste, inventory and reorder supplies. Adhere to general work guidance, comply with local, state, and federal regulations, seek guidance from manager, and adjust to changing work structures or processes. Qualifications Education: Graduated from an accredited school or college of mortuary science. Licenses: Current Funeral Director and Embalmer dual license within the practicing state. Valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving record (required to operate company‑owned vehicles). Industry experience is preferred. Cognitive ability to reason, plan, identify problems, learn quickly, and apply learning to new situations. Process and results oriented; motivated to keep projects moving forward by removing obstacles and exploring alternatives. Positive attitude, self‑motivation, and drive to continually advance industry and business understanding. Ability to build professional and trusting business relations. Professional written and verbal communication skills. Public speaking skills with the ability to influence and gain consensus. Proficiency using databases in automated processes and MS Office. Work Conditions Work Environment: Both indoors and outdoors during all seasons and weather. Professional business attire required when in contact with families. Posture: Frequent sitting or standing of up to 6 hours per day; frequent climbing stairs. Physical Demands: Manual dexterity, ability to push and pull up to 150 pounds on flat and inclined flooring or ramps. Working Hours: Flexibility for services outside normal business hours; nighttime and weekend work is frequently necessary. Compensation & Benefits Pay: $29.80 - $40.20 per hour.
