SUE Technician III (Utility Locator)

OVERVIEW

A SUE Technician III is responsible for the operation and management of a Utility Location and Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) field crew. The role requires accurate, efficient field data collection, location of features, and delivery of data to the office while maintaining detailed records of work and expenses. Strong problem‑solving, analytical, detail‑oriented, and structured traits are essential.

YOUR WORK DAY, YOU WILL

Operate and manage the SUE field crew focused on quality, safety, schedule, budget, and client service. Train crew members on subsurface utility equipment such as ground‑penetrating radar, electromagnetic designating tools, sewer cameras, probe rods, jackhammers, chop saws, pneumatic tampers, vacuum excavation equipment, and other geophysical means, following safety protocols and industry standards. Collaborate with construction crews and contractors to ensure safe excavation and utility installation. Maintain accurate utility location records, including updates. Conduct inspections to identify potential hazards or issues. Organize field work and direct crew members, efficiently collecting data and maintaining records of both work and expense. Adhere to all company policies and procedures. Travel overnight as required. Perform other duties as assigned.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

High School diploma or GED (preferred). 5 to 10 years of progressive experience as a utility locator or SUE technician; proficiency with SUE locating equipment, total stations, GPS, vacuum excavation, and related tools. Strong knowledge of underground utility systems, radar, and ability to interpret maps and records. Physical stamina to walk outdoors for long periods in all terrain and weather conditions. Technical proficiency with process‑oriented, steady, helpful, honest, trustworthy, adaptable, analytical, problem‑solving traits and the ability to work independently. Work 50 hours during busy periods; travel daily, including overnight stays. Ability to lift 50 pounds and operate equipment on site. Excellent attention to detail and ability to work in fast‑paced environments. Background and motor‑vehicle checks, and pre‑employment drug screening, are conditions of employment.
