Departmental Overview The College of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS) is a dynamic new college that brings together faculty, researchers, staff, and students from computing, statistics, the humanities, and social and natural sciences. CDSS was created to meet the opportunities and demands of a world where data, machine learning, and artificial intelligence inform practice and policy in virtually every arena. The College is responsible for growing Berkeley’s broad‑based programs in data science, computing, statistics, and other interdisciplinary programs, including classes and programs serving thousands of undergraduate students a year. This role will support professional programs at the college, including serving as the Graduate Student Affairs Officer (GSAO) for the Master’s of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (MAIML) program. In this capacity, the position will advise current graduate students on academic progress, degree requirements, and university policies, serve as a liaison with the Graduate Division and other campus units, and support the college in building out a broader portfolio of professional educational opportunities, including exchange programs and executive education programs. Responsibilities Academic Advising (30%): Identify and refer intricate student issues such as discrimination, complex grade disputes, and personal crises; recommend petition exceptions; facilitate new course approval; advise students on visa and immigration policies; develop programs and workshops for international students. Program Management (20%): Manage the implementation of new professional programs, advise on career counseling and placement services, counsel students on post‑degree employment, and cultivate potential employers. Recruitment and Admissions (15%): Advise on outreach strategies, coordinate reviews of transferability of non‑UC courses, evaluate transcripts for eligibility, and arrange student recruitment visits. Academic Policy and Financial Aid Oversight (15%): Provide recommendations for policy improvement, analyze consequences of policies, oversee the administration of fellowships, grants, scholarships, and advise students on financial aid options. Student Services Programs (10%): Plan and implement student events such as orientation and professional development. Professional Development (5%): Participate in activities to enhance personal skills and the graduate portfolio of the college. Other Duties (5%): Perform other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications Advanced knowledge of student advising and counseling techniques. Knowledge of university‑specific computer applications and department procedures for risk assessment. Advanced verbal and written communication skills. Interpersonal skills. Multicultural competencies and ability to work with diverse populations. Advanced knowledge of complex visa and immigration policies and procedures. Problem‑identification and reasoning skills; ability to develop original ideas, persuade, and lead. Skills in monitoring and assessing people, processes, or services to make improvements. In‑depth knowledge of post‑degree employment opportunities and practices. Project‑management skills and social perceptiveness. Knowledge of admissions, recruitment, and financial aid processes and strategies. Event‑planning skills, including organizing major events like orientation. Knowledge of career services and employer‑relations processes. Knowledge of developing new educational programs. Bachelor’s degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience or training. Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience or training. Under California law, UC Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role: $72,600 – $101,500.
