B’nai Jeshurun Congregation is a vibrant, welcoming, and mission-driven Jewish community located in suburban Cleveland, Ohio affiliated with the Conservative movement with approximately 900 member households. We are dedicated to fostering engaging religious and spiritual experiences, lifelong learning, and community engagement. We seek an experienced and strategic Controller to lead our financial operations, ensuring the long-term fiscal health and stability of our congregation. Position Overview The Controller serves as the chief financial administrator of the synagogue, overseeing all accounting operations, payroll, budgeting, payables, and the delivery of accurate, timely financial reporting to synagogue leadership. This is a hands-on role responsible for the day-to-day accounting work of the congregation, including entering and posting journal entries, processing vendor invoices and payments, and ensuring the accuracy and completeness of all financial data. The Controller will play a key role in strengthening financial processes, enhancing internal controls, and partnering with synagogue leadership to support our long-term mission. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Controller will work closely with the Treasurer, Budget & Finance Committee, Board leadership, clergy, and staff. The position requires occasional evening commitments for Board and committee meetings. Key Responsibilities Maintain all accounting records, including operating, building, and endowment funds. Manage the full accounts payable cycle, ensuring accurate coding, timely vendor payments, and proper approval workflows. Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements. Produce meaningful financial reports and analyses for synagogue leadership. Monitor operating results and provide timely budget-to-actual reporting. Budgeting & Planning Coordinate the annual budgeting process. Monitor financial performance throughout the year and identify trends and opportunities. Internal Controls & Process Improvement Evaluate and strengthen accounting policies and internal controls. Lead initiatives to improve accounting processes and increase operational efficiency. Help modernize financial reporting and accounting procedures. Maintain accurate balance sheet reconciliations and supporting documentation. Compliance Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and regulatory requirements. Manage operating cash flow and banking relationships. Maintain accounting for donor-restricted funds and endowment activity. Produce donor statements for endowment funds. Support stewardship of congregational assets through sound financial practices. Human Resources Administration Administer payroll, ensuring employees are paid accurately and on time and that all payroll tax filings and related reporting requirements are met. Manage workers' compensation administration, including policy renewals, audits, claims coordination, and compliance with reporting requirements. Coordinate employee benefits administration, including enrollments, changes, and serving as the primary liaison with benefit providers and brokers. Additional Duties as Needed Qualifications We are looking for someone who combines strong technical accounting skills with a collaborative, service-oriented approach. Required Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance Five or more years of progressive accounting experience Experience preparing monthly financial statements Excellent Excel skills and experience with accounting software Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail Ability to communicate financial information clearly to both financial and non-financial audiences Preferred Nonprofit accounting experience Experience with fund accounting Familiarity with QuickBooks and ShulCloud or comparable nonprofit software Ideal Candidate The successful candidate will be: A proactive problem solver who enjoys improving processes.
