Field Service Technician
The Field Service Technician travels daily to customer sites to certify and service clean rooms and related equipment for healthcare and pharmaceutical facilities. This role combines hands-on mechanical and electrical work with precise testing, documentation, and customer communication. You will diagnose issues, perform certifications, conduct repairs, and build strong relationships with customers while working largely autonomously and managing your own schedule. Travel is a core component of the position, including regular driving within several hours of the home base and periodic overnight and out-of-state trips.
Responsibilities:
- Travel daily to customer sites, typically driving 1–2 hours one way, with occasional trips up to 4 hours away and regular overnight travel, including out-of-state travel by plane when needed.
- Work in clean rooms and controlled environments at customer facilities such as compounding pharmacies, hospital operating rooms, medical device manufacturers, and pharmaceutical manufacturers.
- Perform clean room certifications on a defined cadence, ensuring all testing meets regulatory and safety standards.
- Scan HEPA filters based on ceiling height and site layout, and accurately record results.
- Conduct particle counting by operating measurement instruments, pushing carts through designated areas, and systematically testing multiple locations.
- Measure and document room pressure, temperature, and humidity, which make up a significant portion of the job, ensuring conditions meet required specifications.
- Certify hoods, including fume hoods, biosafety cabinets, laminar flow units, and related equipment, and verify they function within required parameters.
- Troubleshoot failed tests by analyzing potential causes, identifying issues, and determining appropriate corrective actions when equipment or environments do not pass certification.
- Perform repairs such as filling holes in filters, changing filters, replacing blower motors, and conducting other mechanical and electrical adjustments as needed.
- Carry out preventative maintenance on clean rooms, hoods, and associated systems to minimize downtime and ensure optimal performance.
- Use service software, tablets, reporting tools, and measurement instruments to document work, record test results, and maintain accurate service records.
- Create and maintain detailed Excel-based reports that capture certification data, test outcomes, and maintenance activities for each customer site.
- Own and nurture customer relationships by serving as the primary on-site contact, building trust, and ensuring a high level of service and professionalism.
- Communicate clearly and confidently with a range of stakeholders, including pharmacists, biomedical engineers, and directors of biomedical systems, explaining findings and recommendations in an accessible way.
- Manage your own schedule and workload, adapting to varying start times (typically between 7–8 a.m.) and adjusting to jobs that may take all day at a single site or involve multiple shorter visits.
- Work independently in the field, making sound decisions, prioritizing tasks, and maintaining a strong sense of ownership and accountability for outcomes.
- Maintain a high level of precision, safety, and regulatory compliance in all testing, documentation, and repair activities.
- Remain calm and effective under pressure in dynamic, fast-paced environments, especially when troubleshooting complex issues.
- Model core values including integrity, openness, urgency, autonomy, and embracing change in all interactions and work practices.
Essential Skills:
- Strong mechanical aptitude and comfort working with hands-on electromechanical systems.
- Basic math skills sufficient for measurements, calculations, and data interpretation.
- Electro-mechanical skills, including the ability to troubleshoot both mechanical and electrical systems.
- Ability to understand technical processes and what is being done during testing, certification, and repair work.
- High level of curiosity and problem-solving ability, with a desire to diagnose issues and determine root causes.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to speak confidently with pharmacists, biomedical engineers, and directors of biomedical systems.
- Ability to communicate at a high level, explaining technical findings and recommendations clearly and professionally.
- Comfort using technology such as service software, tablets, reporting tools, and measurement instruments.
- Proficiency with Excel for data entry and preparation of detailed reports.
- Valid driver's license and ability to drive to multiple customer sites daily.
- Reliability, ownership, and follow-through in completing assigned work and meeting customer expectations.
- Ability to work independently, manage one's own schedule, and thrive in an autonomous field-based role.
- Commitment to precision, safety, and regulatory compliance in all aspects of the job.
- Ability to remain calm under pressure and troubleshoot effectively in fast-paced, dynamic environments.
- Professional presentation skills and ability to maintain a clean, polished appearance when interacting with customers.
Additional Skills & Qualifications:
- Degree from a 2-year technical college or completion of a 4-year program is preferred but not required.
- Technical aptitude in mechanical and electrical disciplines, with the ability to learn additional skills on the job.
- Interest in scaling into a Technician role over time through continuous learning and performance.
- Adaptable mindset, with willingness to embrace change, ask questions, and build technical expertise continuously.
- Customer-focused approach, with the ability to build trust and maintain strong professional relationships.
- Comfort with frequent travel, including driving within a 4-hour radius of the home base and occasional out-of-state travel by plane.
- Team-oriented attitude, aligning with values such as integrity, openness, urgency, autonomy, and embracing change.
Work Environment:
This is a field-based role with daily travel to customer sites, primarily clean rooms and controlled environments in healthcare and pharmaceutical settings. You will work on fume hoods, biosafety cabinets, laminar flow systems, medical HVAC systems, autoclaves, and related equipment. Typical start times range between 7–8 a.m., depending on customer needs, and some days may be spent entirely at one site while others involve multiple visits. Average daily driving is 1–2 hours one way, and once fully trained, you can expect to travel overnight approximately half of the time, including occasional out-of-state trips by plane. Weekend work occurs on a limited basis and may involve overtime when needed. The role requires working in clean rooms and around sensitive medical and pharmaceutical equipment, following strict safety and regulatory protocols. Dress and presentation must be neat and professional to meet customer expectations and maintain a clean, polished appearance in clinical and technical environments. The organization offers a supportive culture with strong benefits, including comprehensive medical coverage for employees and dependents, uncapped paid time off, cell phone reimbursement, an AMEX card for business expenses, and a company vehicle provided after the first three months, all within an environment that values autonomy, integrity, openness, urgency, and embracing change.
